Personal Narrative: Coats Accounting

Decent Essays
I used to work at a small business called Coats Accounting, when I first got out of high school. Joe (my boss) had me working with luis and James. Our job obligations were to interview each customer, ask for their information and get any forms (like 1040s, etc.). We were also in charge of answering phone calls, filing, and running errands. Since I was the only girl , James and Luis would assume that I liked to pick up phone calls and would have me do most of the filling. Even though I was the youngest Joe would put me in charge because of my gender and there for I was thought to be more responsible than the guys. James and Luis of course didn't like this because I was younger, had just graduated high school, and didn't like to get bossed around

This issue is important to me because I grew up being told that girls do this and boys do that. I have four brothers and one sister that I didn’t really get along with. This led to me spending a lot more time rough housing with my brothers.…

There are many gender roles that I have seen or personally experienced myself. I’ve had a friend tell me before that I suck at driving because I am a girl. When asked why, his response that women aren’t very good drivers. I’ve also had co-workers tell me that I am a good worker and that they don’t see hard working girls. I’ve worked at Safeway for about three years now and I can say that I experience gender roles about almost everyday, whether it’s because I’m short or because something is too heavy for me to lift up.…

From an interview that didn’t go too well, to an interview that helped me grow, my customer service professional informational interview took place at a Company that didn’t hire me a year prior. I was given the opportunity to talk to, as well as learn from, Nate Martinson, a sales coach at Capital One, here in Saint Cloud. I was referred to Nate from Becky Shand, my Strategic Customer Service instructor. Nate was one of her past students. Capital One hadn’t initially crossed my mind as a first choice for this assignment, which is why I’m glad I was able to learn more about the company.…

The article “The Real Reason Women Still Get Paid Less” goes in depth on why men get paid more than women. In today's society, women face challenges with getting equal pay as men due to gender discrimination. Gender discrimination occurs when sexes are treated differently. Women skills are undervalued, so women are often paid less than men for doing the same job. Pay scales for jobs requiring similar skills or qualifications tend to be lower when they are mostly done by women.…

Polished Brief Have you ever wanted something so bad that you thought it was necessary for your life to go on, for me that something was a pet dog. At the age of seven I was begging my parents to get me a puppy for about a year, the conversations usually sounded like this “ Hey mom and dad I was wondering if I could get a puppy this year for my birthday?” and they would reply “ I don’t know son a dog is a huge responsibility, I don’t know if you are ready for this yet.” then I would storm off all angry, because I did not get the answer I was looking or hoping for.…

I have enjoyed working in Collections as a Collections Assistant I. Between using prior collections experience from other employers, college, and learning the systems of Bank of North Carolina I feel I have become a well molded employee for Bank of North Carolina. During the past year I have successfully completed all the requirements for a Collections Assistant II based on the Human Resources website. These requirements consist of calling on past dues until they are transferred to Special Assets, completing Check By Phones, processing daily letters and mail, working with post charge off accounts if a customer calls in to make a payment, handling my own collection queues, and creating certified pre-demand/demand letters. Worldwide, people are being judged by something that makes them stand out or are out the ordinary. This is what we call profiling, by judging someone and their abilities or their characteristics without getting to know them. Profiling is a problem, it violates the civil rights of all citizens to have political and social freedom along with equality, but some people in America are ignoring this right, that many have fought for in the Civil War of 1865 ( “Civil Rights” ). The one that believes profiling isn’t an issue of the present time or that people get what they deserve do not see a reason for it to be addressed. They see it as the past is the past and everyone should get over it and move forward.…

I didn’t want to play with dolls, wear dresses or make sure my hair was long and pretty.…
