Personal Narrative: Coaching Youth Basketball

Coaching youth basketball has given me an opportunity to help young kids learn to love basketball. In Coach Rick’s after school basketball program we stress positivity, teamwork, and inclusion rather than the success of the individual. Mistakes are encouraged, not looked down upon. Helping kids with difficult attitudes become team-oriented and positive carries beyond the basketball court. Coaching in the same program that I played in has helped shape my attitude towards everything: positivity, learning from failure, and bringing up those less talented than others. I hope to help bring this attitude to others, and that’s why I was inspired to coach. Joining little over a year ago, I didn’t have the skills or confidence necessary to impart this
