The Hillsborough Middle School Girls Lacrosse Team had an exceptional season, finishing with a strong record of 11-5. They managed to score a whopping 147 goals, and 19 out of the 22 players contributed to that miraculous number. Although the team suffered a tough loss during the semi-finals in a close game against Montgomery, they each blossomed as not only players but people. Tessa Norfleet, one of the team's three captains, shared her thoughts on the season. She stated, “Though we unfortunately did not win the championship this year, it’s important to see how far our team has come since tryouts.…
I became passionate when I was recognized by a high school coach at something I thought I was doing inadequately at. Meanwhile, over the time I have developed and was awarded the MVP award. In 2009 at West Middle School, I was in the eighth grade and heard that the school was having tryouts for the new volleyball team. Although I didn’t care too much about it, but my cousin Shantel and…
Partway through my first Junior Varsity baseball practice, it was clear that I was the least qualified player on the team. Still learning the basics of baseball, I was pulled aside by the coaches and told that they were still uncertain of their decision and that they would be monitoring my progress to determine eligibility. As soon as I got home, I studied baseball through any video, started attending every practice offered, and constantly requested one-on-one coaching sessions. My coaches slowly took notice of my commitment and my rapidly developing skill set in baseball.…
Enough about my parents, now let's focus on the real issue here. Me. My mom’s pregnancy wasn’t all too pleasing. When my mom was going through labor with me, doctors discovered that my umbilical cord was wrapped around my neck eight times, which is why I was born through a C-section.…
It was a warm April afternoon. Everyone on the softball team was dismissed at 9th period (2:15 p.m.). We waited for our bus to come and take us to Upper Perk. When everyone loaded the bus, you can smell confidence in the air. As the 7th and 8th grade teams waited for their coaches and the bus, we sat and talked about how bad the hallway smelled because it was the hallway to the boy’s locker room.…
One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…
The summer going into my junior year, I tried out for the summer baseball team. However, although I had never anticipated there would be a problem with my talent levels, considering I had played freshman and sophomore year, I did not make the roster. I was devastated. In the eight years of my baseball career, this was by far the lowest of lows. When faced with adversity and defeat many people decide to give up and quit.…
About a year or so ago, I made the 8th grade basketball team. I was happy and ready to work at my skills so I could better myself on the team. Basketball has always been my favorite sport and making the 8th grade team made me love it even more. Making the team made me a better person being around all my friends. Makings the 8th grade basketball team was one of those little things that would impact my life and make me a better person.…
THE EIGHT FOOT CIRCLE “Stand up for what you believe in even if that means standing alone”. When I was younger and got my first opportunity to stand up for myself without anyone pushing me to succeed things didn't go as planned. Although I didn't succeeded I took a lesson from it in the end. “Play ball” the umpire called out as we jogged on to the field. Like every game before I headed for third base.…
When I think about dance teams, I don't necessarily think of the dancing concept but rather the friendships and the memories made. Most people feel most confident and accustomed to what they live with everyday, making life changing decisions very difficult to make. Me being one. I danced on a Competitive Dance Team called Dance Dynamics, and never expected to ever leave. I was brought up a question by my former dance teacher asking if I ever considering being on my High School Drill team.…
This last school year I moved to Nebraska to live there for awhile. While I was there I went to school and played my favorite sport baseball. I was very excited for our first practice, and our first game. My excitement skyrocketed when coach told me at the end of practice that I would start at shortstop and close the game pitching.…
Failure is all around us, for most of us it is a daily occurrence even with little things like failing a quiz or missing a shot in your game. I used to let my failures define me and who I have been especially when I failed to make the Varsity soccer team my junior year. I believed I worked hard and I should have been able to accomplish this goal of mine. I worked hard throughout the summer and tried my hardest to keep up with the other girls so I would make Varsity.…
At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…
“His name is Mitchell, but we call him Mitch-Hell,” my mom joked. The kid mustered a laugh, but his face did not show the same impression. There were two big traditions for my family during the summer months. We would go on vacation together to a little beach town in Florida called Rosemary Beach. The second tradition was a game that we created ourselves.…
Volleyball has been an important aspect of my life ever since I began in seventh grade and my commitment to the sport has grown with each year. Heading into high school, I knew that I wanted to continue with volleyball. To better prepare myself, that summer I went to a week-long intensive volleyball camp, where my skills increased exponentially. Back at home, I went to every open gym and beach volleyball session the varsity team provided. I wanted to prove that I was capable of playing at a high school level.…
