The first construction trains that leave for our borders and departs in 40 hours. I call on you, citizens, to protect yourself, to protect the person in front of you, to protect and serve us all! Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

This week was fun for me because I made the soccer team and we had a fun week of practices. We had much less homework this week than the previous week which was very fortunate because my brother and I had their grade’s curriculum nights so I was not getting home until eight thirty. There were three quizzes/tests this week which was a little rough but I think I got through them well. I thought that the Socratic seminar in LA was a little bit of a dud because…

President Barack Obama once said “When all American are treated as equal, no matter who they are or who they love, we are all more free.” As a Hispanic LGBTQ American, these words resonated with me. In my exposure to a plethora of cultures, in my personal experience and academic career, I have had the privilege to understand and further appreciate many lifestyles. Through these experiences, my mission: to serve toward compassion and respect, rather than intolerance and isolation, has remained clear. These past 8 years, Obama has been a champion for LGBTQ+ Americans.…

I have spent a lot of time exploring what it means to be black in America and to be a woman. With a journalism career spanning 17+ years as a writer and editor, I established myself as a trusted music historian, cultural critic and impenetrable voice of my generation. I have interviewed Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Common and numerous others while examining Hip Hop as a sociopolitical movement along with analyzing contemporary black culture and urban life for The Chicago Defender, HipHopDX, Soul Train and numerous other media outlets. After many years of living my dream, I became disgruntled and decided to pursue my life long goal to earn my college degree. Since i was 6 years old i have had two lives. One is confined to the months of june through august, the months of fireflies and bikinis. I live my summer life as a free spirit on lake Winnipesaukee NH. I wake up at 5 am, watch the sunrise, drink green tea, venture through the mountains of New Hampshire, dance in the rain, and spend days painting at the end of the dock. I swim in the lake with my siblings until our shoulders burn and eat melting ice cream cones until our stomachs hurt, loving every minute.…

There was once a time in my life when I believed growing up hispanic in the ghetto parts of California was considered a recipe for failure, until my family moved to Washington State. While attending elementary school, I the was bullied by the rest of the kids in school, but the teachers never seemed to notice and that made my situation worse and made me feel left out. When I entered high school, I never participated in any school events or sports because I was overweight, and self conscience about what others thought about me. The teachers never treated me the same as the rest of the students because they played sports; they didn’t have to do certain assignments, would be graded better, and even have more privileges than others. I was never really treated like the others because I read Literature and didn’t do sports, until the end of my Sophomore year my Family and I moved to a neighboring town and school, where I suddenly was treated normal and I Began to participate in sports and clubs.…

Today, I received the most disheartening news: I deserve no rights as a person. For years, white men have continued to oppress my fellow African-American slaves. Even my slave master, Dr. John Emerson, kept me under his hold until his death a few years ago. He dragged me away from Missouri to Illinois, Wisconsin, and full circle to Missouri. In my knowledge, Illinois and Wisconsin prohibit owning slaves, and yet I was still not free.…

In school we learn that evolution occurs overtime within living organisms. I took this theory into my own hands as I sought out to transform my life into the one I knew I deserved, theone that would be adapt to any situation and hardship, and most importantly the one in which I knew I would leave a legacy behind. Humans inherit 46 chromosomes from their parents, but I procured much more than a genetic sequence: a thirst for greatness, a hunger for improvement, and unremitting devotion which have served as a fundamental blueprint throughout my academiccareer. My father, an alcoholic who never went to college and walked out on an early age, taughtme to explore the world with critical eyes, constantly seeking to learn more and explore more. My mother an OBGYN was pinned into a position in which she had to choose between sticking with her four…
