Personal Narrative: Chronic Illness

Improved Essays
I look back at my younger siblings, Maria and Juana, who are twins, their relentless pleas for food aimed at my mother vexing me greatly. My mother has drove for hours, not stopping to allow us to relieve ourselves or obtain food. I harshly silence them, understanding that they are only fortifying the stress on her to drive to the United States Border quicker. Glancing at her, the composed face, she constantly places on during trying situations only belied by the incessant tapping of her foot on the bottom of the car and the furrowing of her brows. Slanting my back to watch the scenery from the window, my mind wandering back to our home in Mexico. I reminisce about the memories there, a gentle smile fixed on my face when I remember my childhood

In his book, The Illness Narratives: Suffering, Healing and the Human Condition, Arthur Kleinman poses ideas and eight questions about illness experiences that every patient endures. The eight questions provide an insight into how the patient views the illness they have, what they think it does, fears about what it will do and any additional problems it has triggered. For this assignment, I have used these questions as a way to guide my interview with a childhood friend of mine, Sydney Karre. Sydney and I were on the same club swimming team growing up and she was always the “life of the party.”…

The patient I chose to be my geriatric patient is an active 81 year old man. For the sake of this project we will refer to him as Chaz. Looking at Chaz, you would never imagine that he is 81 years old. Since retiring, as an engineer from Cessna Aircraft, over 10 years ago, Chaz has been staying busy. In addition to riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle, Chaz is a member of the Wichita Corvette Club, often going out to 81 Speedway to watch the races.…

If I were terminally ill I would highly consider entering a hospice, especially once I could no longer care for myself. According to Leming and Dickinson (2016) “The primary goals of hospice care are to promote patient–family autonomy, to assist patients in obtaining pain control and real quality of life before they die, and to enable families of patients to receive supportive help during the dying process and the bereavement period” (p. 216). These are all great ways to have a better, more dignified death. I have no children, and am not sure if it is a part of my plan to have any, so I do not expect my next of kin to care for me. Even if eventually I do decide to have children, it is not as common throughout American culture to care for a…

If these struggling years have taught me anything it is this: that showing weakness was a death sentence.…
