Once a week, I meet up with my friend Michael to talk about some of the bigger ideas that seem to consume the great majority of my thoughts. Our bonfire chats generally last until 9 or 10 PM, just in time for me to catch some of the George Noory show on my way home. How can you not love a talk radio show devoted to aliens and conspiracies?
The other night, however, 1290 AM was not coming in too great, so I scanned the dial and stumbled upon a voice that could only be that of a Christian preacher. I could tell because he was droning on in that breathy way pastors are wont to do—yes Jesus, yes Jesus, we praise your name, Hallelujah, yes Lord. Could you imagine talking to your spouse like that? Yes dear, yes honey, you are so lovely, oh how great you are, yes my beloved.
Gag me now.

He began by suggesting that Christianity contained the only truth in the world, while the secularists, the humanists, the Muslims, the LGBTQ community, the Buddhists, the Hindus, the agnostics, the atheists, the liberals, the anarchists, the communists, the socialists, the Marxists, and all the others –ists were dead wrong. Of course, what he meant to say is that premillenial-dispensationalist-conservative-Evangelicalism is correct, and everyone is else is going to hell to burn forever in a lake of fire. And then, full of even greater certainty and pride, the kicker: “we know we win (and they don’t) and so that gives us

Edwards is referencing Psalm 90:11 from the bible, which is an example of allusion, this shows that he is credible because he has knowledge of the bible. The congregation will respect him and listen to him because he knows what he is talking about. "Many that were very lately in the same miserable condition that you are in are now in a happy state with their hearts filled with love to him who has loved them, and washed them from their sins in his own blood." (Edwards 44).…

There are many stories told in my family. Anyone and everyone told them, some nights it would be my mom and other nights it would be my grandpa. There would always be two stories read; the first one would be from a book called “My Book of Bible Stories”. This book has so many pictures asks questions has descriptive words and is still one of my favorite books. After that story whoever was telling the story would make up a silly story usually about a blue or green man with a giraffe that went traveling and exploring (I have no clue why).…

,” I found it to be purposeful. In fact, Merritt caused me to listen up. As I noted earlier under the substance category, Merritt, in my opinion, was very personable, and rather than eye contact, gestures, or anything else related to delivery, it was Merritt’s personable demeanor that made him believable. While this sermon was not showy or flashy, it was simple, and because of the sermon’s simplicity, the average person could easily grasp the meaning of Merritt’s message and apply it to everyday…

“Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat.” George W. Bush stated this about the cowardly September 11th attacks. During that fateful day I was glued to my poorly constructed high school chair, gazing in disbelief what was unfolding on Mr. Cox’s History class television.…

Many people don’t know what they want to be when they “grow up”, as for my mother she didn’t know what type of religion she wanted to be in when she “grew up”. However, she did know the basics that she believed in which was God, the Holy Spirit, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Bible that being said she considered herself Christian and raised me as a Non-Denominational Christian. That was until my senior year of High School when my mom decided she no longer wanted to be part of the Non-Denominational Christian faith and switched over to becoming part of the LDS faith known as the Mormons and flipped my life upside-down with their different views of norms and values. Growing up Non-Denominational Christian is fairly simple faith and to me…

Even before they’d paused in the music to greet each other and shake hands with the people around them. For some reason, I hadn’t expected that; hadn’t felt that kind of community love from my Catholic roots or the few times I’d gone to visit a Mormon sect. It built upon my discomfort, built upon the idea that I was an invader to their devotion. The music was beautiful and religious, people singing openly to “I couldn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, yet still you give yourself away” and “Lord you’re the only thing that matters everything else can fade away”. I expected it, that kind of talk, expected most of the sermon to be about a translation and description of the Bible.…

The speaker describes the event and the preacher, yet also notes how the preacher even made him feel “like joining in the shouts of Amen! Hallelujah!” even though the speaker describes himself as “more or less sophisticated and non-religious” (127). Describing himself here draws on the idea that not only does the speaker look to be disconnected or removed from the event but he also feels that he is better than the people participating in the big meeting, which is also shown in the next sentence where he says “the preacher’s words... glowing with the eloquence of primitive poetry” (127). It does not seem to be that he looks down on the congregation but does have a sense of sophistication that he believes they do not possess.…

Amongst the obvious differences between a pastor and a priest, there are unique comparisons to be drawn from Father Benjamin Tremmel and Pastor Ronald Cobb, including their love for the community, their passion for the communion, and their balanced approach to preaching. To begin with, an examination of the importance communion plays in the opinions of Father Ben and Pastor Cobb would reveal they share a very similar view on the role of communion in the church. Unequivocally, communion is of the utmost importance in a Sunday service, but not all leaders of the Church…

There are many problems with today’s preaching and Pasquarello in his book Sacred Rhetoric: Preaching as a Theological and Pastoral Practice of the Church examines how this can be fixed (vii). Preachers need to go back to the foundations of good preaching exemplified in those preachers of the past who practiced “doctrine, biblical exegesis, worship, spirituality and the moral life, and so forth” (vii). This book review will examine selected preachers that Pasquarello presents, with an emphasis on the importance of preaching through the ministry of God’s Word. Summary…

Before I met Christ, I wasn’t the same girl you know now. Even though I grew up in a Christian family I didn’t listen to his word. Before I accepted Jesus Christ into my heart, I didn’t smile a lot because I felt like there was no need to smile because my life was a complete and utter wreck and I didn’ try very hard or honestly care about anything. It was a first time visit, and at the conclusion of the service, the Evangelist said, “My spirit tells me there is another pastor in the congregation.” I looked around, and no one else moved. After waiting for a moment to test the call, I came forward, and the Evangelist said, “Come alongside me, and you will see God work in a way that will change your ministry.” We had travelled to this meeting with another couple and a nurse and were strangers to everybody present. The Evangelist called out my friend’s name and said, “Neil, God desires to heal you, come up for prayer.” As my sceptical friend approached us, the Evangelist extended his hand toward him and said, “You have (naming the clinical term for his serious back condition).…

On August 26, 2005, I gave my life to Christ, and it was the start of a whole new chapter of my journey. I still remember that night vividly in my head. The feelings of excitement, joy, and love were very tangible in my heart. My mom and dad were both sitting beside me on my bed while I was told the importance of this decision and how my life would never be the same. Even at 5 years old, I was aware of my decision to follow Jesus and accept him into my heart.…
