Never once did I stop running around using my physical sluggishness as a crutch, I wanted to have fun and be a kid. When High School arrived, this wasn't as easy, school work became longer, time outside became shorter and friends grew distant. This is when I tried to learn why I wasn't as happy with who I was. I wanted to be healthier, I wanted to fit into my changing body, so I learned. I learned about healthy and unhealthy ingredients, how to read the Glycemic Index and portion control. Next, cooking, and the incredible uses for spices, they not only aid in flavor, but plenty benefit your health too. Cayenne pepper for example, among a slew of helpful uses, can boost your metabolism aiding digestion. I indulged in exercise programs and became my own health advocate. My goal wasn't to look like the women in magazines. There was no way I'd ever be 5'4" and a size 0 with my short torso, long legs, broad hips and wide shoulders, simple physics. My goal was to feel good, to look good in whatever I felt comfortable wearing, to go out and hike whenever I wanted to and not get tired, to sit on the couch watching a little television and not feel guilty. The key is creating a foundation of support, learning different paths of motivation, and setting a multitude of goals to reach, no matter how small they may be. Being healthy is not always about how others see you, it's about how you see yourself, what you are putting into your body has to coincide with what you are expecting from your body. Happiness with your health cannot just be achieved by finding the right workout program or the right group of friends, it takes work and effort every day. It is a lifestyle choice, you shouldn't expect to sit on the couch eating a bag of processed potato chips, while drinking 2 gallons of soda, then go walk a mile and say you're healthy. It's up to you, who your surround yourself with, the items on that grocery list, and your attitude about becoming a healthier person, to identify you as a happy and healthy individual.
