Personal Narrative: Child Observation Of Children

Decent Essays
I went to a daycare that Donna ran in her home and observed the children playing in the playroom inside and a backyard with a sand box, swing set, and play toys. I observed 5 children. Molly, Chris, Lilly, Kevin, and Carrie. I studied them for 3 days in a week back to back.
Molly age 4, Chris, age 4 Lilly, age 3, Kelvin age 3, and Carrie age 5. Molly and Carrie are sisters. When in the playroom they normally did small activities such and coloring, reading, or working on crafts. On day one all the children were coloring their own paper, but sharing crayons among them. They were quiet at the beginning, but about 5 minutes into the activity Carrie asked Lilly what she thought of her picture. Lilly replied with “ I like your Pink dog, can I draw one?” Carrie quickly replied with “No, Its my dog.” They then started arguing about whose dog it was. The arguing stopped when Lilly said she would draw a cat. Once all the kids were out side I noticed the girls all ran to the sandbox and began to build sad castles. Molly was building a castle while Carrie watched her. Carrie told her where to put things but she didn’t want to get her clothes dirty. Lilly on the other had played on the other end of the sand box by herself. She didn’t talk to the other girls when she would go and get things to dig her hole or create objects in the sand. Further back in the play yard were Chris and kelvin playing with some kick balls and fome bowling pens. Kelvin would throw the ball at the pen but Chris would kick it at them and they would score it on how many they knocked over. Some days after they played a little they would come back together and pick a

The Effects of the Lack of Play on Learning: The first few years are the most crucial for brain development and research has shown that stimulating play and learning experiences for children help to build connections in the brain called neural pathways which are essential for cognitive development. Lack of these opportunities restricts the development of these pathways, slowing down or delaying learning in the short term and affecting a child’s chances in the long term. Play is one of the main ways in which children interact with one another and form relationships. Lack of social interaction can lead to a child not being able to learn how to co-operate, develop confidence as well as problem solving and thinking skills.…

The fabric game was the primary focus as I could properly hear how the two girls interacted between each other. I noticed that the “block girl” would pick out three or four cut-outs for her board and whatever she did not use the other girl would ask to use. This lead me to believe that the other girl did not really know what she wanted to make but was instead just putting the left overs to her board, which was strange becuase the pile of cut-out was rather large and there was no need to just use what the other girl did not. The caregiver stayed near the activity for a few moments but noticing there was no problem between the two girls she removed herself and went back to the dress up area. The kids who continued to dress up had gotten a little…

The age from one to three is the toddler years, which is very exciting and challenging for parents and caretakers. The language and interpersonal skills are being developed rapidly during this stage along with the motor, cognitive and physical developments. There are changes that can be noticed in the toddler such as the gaining of independence and struggling with separation. (Sensening, A., 2016)…
