I am blessed to have grown up in a stable household where I was always surrounded by love and support. When I was little, I thought that this was normal. As I grew up and began volunteering with a local non-profit, Sharing and Caring, I was exposed to extremely different family situations. Sharing and Caring’s annual event, the Princess Experience, gives kids the opportunity to spend their day playing with the volunteer princesses. The silent auction and ticket proceeds support the families in need. Also, some of the ticket proceeds went towards supporting the Northwest Arkansas (NWA) Children’s Shelter. …show more content…
One other volunteer and I were chosen to be the only two princesses to stay for their private party. This was the first time I interacted directly with neglected and abused kids. I’ll never forget the undeniable differences between these girls’ mannerisms and those of “normal” kids. Some of the girls refused to let me get within two feet of physical contact, while others wouldn’t look me in the eye. This experience sparked my passion for helping abused kids build a better future. In my future, I can use the problem solving and analysis skills I build from my Industrial Engineering degree and apply them to determining the causes of child abuse and finding a solution.
