Personal Narrative: Cherish The Good Times

Cherish the Good Times State basketball quarterfinals unraveled to be an exciting and victorious trip for the squad and me. We began our trip on a cool March morning where a huge white charter bus waited on our arrival before we leave the locker room we all do a quick scan to see if we have everything. I yell “does everyone have their socks, shoes, and uniform.” The team quickly responds with a loud yes and a thumb up. All the coaches then do a brief check to see if everything is in the right place. After the all bag checks it is time to load up the bus. We put all of our bags underneath the bus in a secret compartment. Once packed, we load the bus; I walk a couple rows back to find a good seat just far enough from all the coaches. I’m making shots and building my confidence after each shot I take. With seven minutes left we convene one final time before tipoff. I am focused and ready to go. The game gets underway; we start off by scoring the first 12 points of the ball game. As the game continues to progress I grow more and more confident in my game because the oppositions are having a hard time containing me. I’m scoring with ease and setting teammates up for scoring opportunity while also turning up the intensity on the defensive. I continue to dice the defense with ease and make a variety of spectacular plays. It’s a scrappy battle that in my opinion I thought we were dominating the whole game. Late in the fourth quarter I get the feeling that we are going to win it, so I look at the clock and see it running down 3… 2… 1… the buzzer sounds and I get a rush of unbelievable joy through my body. I sprint to give all my teammates an emotional hug and celebrate the tremendous accomplishment. On the way to the locker room I scream to all my teammates “I love you guys.” I’m then stopped by several news reporters that want to hear my thoughts on the game. First off I thank all the fans that came to support, especially the student section that created a near deafening environment the whole game. I then proceed to talk about the groove we were in, and how we knew we couldn’t give up this late in the game. One reporter then says “did you know you were

I look up at the clock and there's only 10 seconds left and I wonder how it dispersed so quickly, the fans help my team gain momentum and the point guard launches the ball like a rocket almost decapitating. Errrr! The buzzer pierce my ears like a high pitched opera singer, as soon as everyone reaches the huddle our coach gives a vigorous, potential game winging speech before the buzzer rings again like gun shots. Now that everyone has distributed among the court and are waiting for me to take the ball out all I can think about is what if I mess this…

As you could have guessed, the game went to extra innings, we had two outs and the hitter before me nearly hit a homerun. It was one of those moments in a movie where the skinny kid who no one had faith in hits the walk off hit, winning the game and becoming the team's star. However, real life is not like a Disney movie, and any hope for my clutch last minute hit to advance us to the finals was swept away when I popped up the ball a mile high and was sent back to the dugout to contemplate my failure. I was extremely frustrated at myself, I spent the bus ride home quietly looking out the window, repeating the dreadful moment in my head, as the ball went straight up.…

A whole season of hard work and commitment had brought us to this chance to move into a first place tie in the conference. Moreover, with a few winnable games left, we had the chance of an outright conference championship. For me, this game meant a lot more. I was feeling validated for the hard work I had been putting into practice even though I was not a starter. I was showing strong teamwork and helping the offense run better with strong fundamentals and understanding of the coach’s desired offensive approach.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

I had prepared all summer and in the preseason, nothing was going to get in my way. Our team was smaller this year and lacked the skill we had in the previous years, but that just meant I was going to have to step up even more. I was totally ready for the season and whatever challenges we would face as a team.…

The first time I learned basketball was when I am at the 6th grade when my physical education teacher registered me in a basketball summer camp. I used to be a shy and quiet girl but since joining the summer camp I started to socialize and have friends. After two months of learning basketball, I began to like it. Then, I started playing basketball in high school as part of my school’s team and I’ve been playing ever since. It started out as just an activity, and then became a hobby that’s something fun to do but later on, I found that I really like basketball.…
