Personal Narrative: Cheerleading

After 13 years of cheerleading, I have learned that there are many ways that you can get hurt. I would never listen to my coach when he would tell me that I needed to stop or that I needed to change the way I would tumble. He would try to teach me the correct way, and I would just brush it off because I thought that I knew everything about tumbling. But of course, I didn’t. I was working on my fulls and my coach kept telling me to use my hips to spin.
“I am getting all the way around, so I don’t need to change anything.” I kept telling myself. I would do it and land up right, with my knees slightly facing the right.
“If you keep doing that you will tear your ACL or you will break something. I need you to do as I told you and use your hips.” My coach would yell at me every time I landed. I would nod my head, go back to the corner of the floor, then do it again. My coach would get so mad, but as far I knew, I was landing it and that’s all I had to do.

In my back handspring, my hands had overlapped and I didn’t get a good set out of it like I needed. I set as much as I could and wrapped, but I didn’t make it all the way around. The top half of my body made it to the front, but my knees were still spinning as I landed. I felt a shock wave of pain, and heard a loud pop. A pop that was so loud, it sounded as if it hadn’t originated from my body, but it did. I collapsed and started screaming. The pain I felt was unbearable, like hundreds of knives going into my knee. My coach ran over and started yelling for someone to call my
