Personal Narrative

Throughout the years of my schooling, I have been influenced by unique experiences and relationships. The experiences and relationships that I have encountered throughout the years of my education have taught me to challenge my reading level in order to successfully make it through college, to practice my weaknesses.

The first time I saw the peculiar, but yet interesting Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy High School, I was intimidated. I remember meeting my English teacher, Jennifer Semanco, while exploring my new surroundings. I was hoping for the opportunity of getting along with all the girls as well as with my teachers. Not only was I new,but I was also the only girl taking ESOL in my freshman class. English thus far had been quite a challenge for me since it is my second language. However, it took that one teacher to

One, girls who are restricted due to economic problems are seen the same and are not treated any differently than those girls who are financially stable. Two, there is a unique staff and student bond. My impression was that the Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy is encountering student success through getting to know us,at a personal level and developing on close relationships. I love that their mission is to engage girls in the STEM, science technology engineering, and math, field. While taking General Music as one of my fine arts credit I knew deep down that composing music was not my Forte. Nonetheless, I paid close attention to the passion and devotion that Mr.Collins would establish among all thirteen members of our class that it brought me to the conclusion of regardless the challenge I would face, I was going to give it my all. As a sophomore in high school, my second lesson was to not give up on a subject or material that I disesteem of personally. Therefore, just by providing my best effort I knew that it would not go by

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Thomas Jefferson High School prides itself on individuality and diversity; this is why I can say with confidence that what sets Saranga apart from her peers in English class is her unique ability to remain attentive, cooperative, creative, and positive in all situations. Whether working independently, or with a group, Saranga takes the lead and ensures task or project completion with the highest amount of quality possible. Having a strong work ethic is vital for success and Saranga’s is beyond reproach-- it is contagious to those who are fortunate enough to work with her, as evidenced by her continual high academic performance as she was on Honor Roll throughout her two years at Kilmer Middle School.…

Looking back a week later, the Young Democrats High School Leadership Academy was nowhere near what I imagined. And I mean that in a good way. I had an idea going into the conference of what I expected out of it: marketing, social media branding, touring, and networking. And yet, in hindsight, YDA HSLA was all of that, but immensely more.…

People come together for many different reasons. In the days since my Uncle Ricky got hurt on his motorcycle and found out he had cancer people have really come together and been there for him. People have gathered together and thrown him a “Celebration of Life” party that over 150 people came together to celebrate. My Uncle Ricky was a truck driver so we brought in the trucks and blew the horn for him one last time. Just like in the movie Freedom Writers, how the black people came together with the Mexicans and Cambodian people and had parties.…

A host of “outsiders” have been my passport to educational opportunities that are otherwise rarely discussed. I am deeply appreciative of the knowledge and understanding of what is possible they have given me. While my family has little time to explore Maine’s trails, living on less than $16K/year, I normally trek everywhere, just not in as beautiful settings. In camps people from any and everywhere join our campfire meals. Frequently populated with college aspirants and graduates who paint glowing pictures of their alma maters and how their education translated into future success are the most interesting to me.…

“One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.” These words of Carl Jung indicate that the purpose of school is not solely to teach new academic material, but also to impart skills and characteristics. Solon High School mentors and teachers are there to aid the transition of a freshman to a fully developed senior with a distinct and unique character.
