As a first generation college student there were many challenges I faced as I graduated high school. From a young age my parents told me that I would only be able to attend college if I got scholarships. For so long I was pressured to do well in school in the hopes of funding my future career. In May 2012 I graduated as the Valedictorian of my class. With an estimated family contribution of zero, I was able to receive financial aid and grants in addition to the scholarships I received. My tuition was completely covered and I was able to pursue my degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry and Spanish. Although my tuition and books were paid for, I still began to work part time as a research assistant the second semester of my freshman year.
