Personal Narrative: Chair Order Test

Decent Essays
Tick, tock, tick, tock… I was next in line to play a part of my solo for a chair order test. Was I going to play well, or was I going to play terrible like before ? I couldn’t believe that I had put myself in this situation. After hours, and hours of practicing my solo, I still felt nervous. While students were playing their part, I was studying, and analyzing my part. Then came my turn to play... ‘‘Sofia,’’ Mrs. Ward said. It was my turn. The whole room became silent, so I quickly sat up in position, and began. Once I began playing my first note, I kept calm, keeping my air tone nice, and steady. I moved on to the last note, and finished. Whenever the entire class went Mrs. Ward gave us our chair order.

TAYLA LIPKIEWICZ Lesson 1: We spent the first lesson learning the melody to the song “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” as it is song we, as an ensemble, decided to learn. As this song is very fast and upbeat we spent a fair bit of time trying to get the right speed and the right lyrics before we began to add in harmonies. I feel like as an ensemble we need to work on listening to the conductor and not talking when we are supposed to be singing. I feel as if I contributed very well and committed myself to learning the song.…

When I was preparing myself for my RCM Level 10 Violin Examination, I had agreed to do a solo performance of one of my pieces for an annual exhibition which my music academy organized. While it wasn't a competition, there would be an audience of hundreds of people - the students, the parents, teachers, and any friends they might invite. I had previously partaken in this yearly event but always as part of a group, never a performance of my own. This was foreign and completely daunting to me. I had taken this on to familiarize myself with one of my Level 10 repertoire so it was expected that I memorize my music score as well.…

I decided months ago that I was going to put my best work into practicing for my final orchestral seat assignment. With seats based on the quality of a single audition, I knew that I’d have to put in the hours to get to the front row. I got the music the first week of school and immediately wrote in the notes of the tenor clef: contrasting my native bass clef in its high register, I didn’t want to mess it up. I worked out fingerings and string-crossing and rhythms, but never picked up my cello at home. I only ever worked out the music in class, and I wasn’t the only one.…

Auditions were always there, the days dark clouds on the calendar. Playing in front of an adjudicator, who scribbled furiously at every mistake you made. They were especially nerve-wracking for a violist, like me. Not many people chose to play the viola. There is very little solo repertoire, and the orchestra parts are often boring.…

“That’ll be a dollar and fifteen cents,” uttered the grouchy lady in the box office. The lady started to eyeball my satchel so I handed her the cash, took my ticket and hurried into the “I walk the Line” concert before she could search through it. I must’ve waited at least a full hour to get in and I was even late to the concert. I made it to the seat and the concert still had not started.…

When the word “home” is defined in a dictionary you are given definitions like “the place in which one’s domestic affections are centered” or “any place of residence or refuge” but to me home means so much more. To me, home is theatre. Those who know me well will attest that the change in me throughout this experience is drastic. Theatre transports me to places I couldn’t dream of otherwise and two years ago, I was taken to a place that would change my life forever and theatre transformed to the place I call home. Thoughts and ideas flooded my mind as I stepped into the off-green colored cafeteria.…

A few days ago I was lucky enough to attend a live orchestra concert at LACMA. I had never been to a professional music concert before and after learning about the different styles of music in class I was anxious to see what was in store for me. When I was a freshman, I decided to take private violin lessons and join my teacher’s private orchestra group to further my skills. Although, this was where I faced my biggest struggle: playing in front of others. During the rehearsal, the conductor would ask us to individually play a specific section in the music to test if we practiced or not. When she announced we were going to play one by one, I would get anxious and fidget. During my turn, I would play quietly and out of tune.…
