I am a woman. I am a firefighter. Oftentimes it feels like those two statements were never meant to be said together, but I say them proudly. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had to smile politely or laugh awkwardly when a stranger hurled a cliché in my direction, I’d be quite wealthy. It’s not easy being a firefighter.…
Introduction My last semester at Middle Georgia State University as an undergraduate student was filled with a wonderful opportunity to intern with the Bibb County Sheriff Department. My internship experienced was supervised under the leadership of Cindy Gresham, the executive assistant of the agency. Historically, social control in Bibb County was maintained by two separate entities, the Bibb County Sheriff Department and the former Macon Police Department. There were multiple attempts to consolidate the two agencies in efforts to decrease the amount of tax payer dollars allocated to public service and to increase the effectiveness and efficiently of their service performance.…
“Whatever you are be a good one!” - Abraham Lincoln. My Michigan Hero has been there since day one. He does anything imaginable. In my eyes can carry the weight of the world. He’s hands down one of the most amazing people i’ve known my whole entire life.…
Question 6 During my volunteer work at Cornerstone Ranch and Rescue, I learned that physics could be applied to any aspect of everyday life. This has helped me solidify my understanding of physics and eager to learn more. The realization of how physics is everywhere has sparked my interest to want to learn more physics in order to get a better understanding of how and why the world works the way it does. The property owner related many concepts of horseback riding and ranch work with physics-related ideas so that I could relate them to a science-based mindset.…
The Infantryman I joined the Infantry as I wanted a challenge and excitement in my life. We are known to be stupid by the rest of the army. Actually, we are the most valuable bunch in the army. Our training is one of the hardest training that you can ever go through as a human being. It test you physically, mentally and emotionally.…
I never dreamed I would become a firefighter. Ultimately, I wanted to pursue a career as a commercial airline pilot. I determined due to financial obligations, that goal was beyond my reach. Consequently, a fire chief friend of mine approached me about becoming a firefighter.…
Our Smoky Mountains Adventure This summer, me and my family went on a vacation. It was beautiful. We did many many fun things. This is about our seven-day vacation to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.…
Growing up in Vail, I would often ride the chair lift with strangers and they would ask, “Where are you from?” I would reply “here.” The people I shared the chairlift with would tell me how lucky I was, but I would just smile politely and nod, unaware of my fortune. I had grown up in mountains and didn’t know anything different. As I have gotten older and been fortunate enough to have traveled outside of my familiar mountain range, I have realized how intensely beautiful mountains are.…
My time at Valley Forge was over, I had been fighting for general George Washington since the summer of 1775 and the victory on April 13 looked so far away because it was only late December, and it was seeming as if a turning point was unlikely. Do I stay and be loyal to my brothers or do I leave and never look back. I had to make my choice very soon, I could have left and the pain of seeing my brothers die , or I could stay and fight for my freedom such as many men had already done. The decision I made was to stay and fight for my country because many men had gotten sick, and I was a faithful servant to my country and I wanted to do what I came to the new world to do which was achieved my freedom .…
On the night of April 1, 2007 a mom and two of her three children were killed in a total loss electrical fire. The woman’s husband and their oldest daughter have been close family friends of mine for the past 4 years, and I have seen up close the destructive affects of the horrific loss they suffered 8 years ago. When the two children and mother were killed, the boy was 11, his younger sister only 9, and their mother 34. The horrific ramifications from this loss are the reason I want to join Kimball Union’s fire brigade in order to help prevent these terrible events from destroying innocent people’s lives.…
The Great Smoky Mountains I had never smelt the mountains before. When I was planning my trip everyone who had been there before said, “Oh, that smell! You’ll never forget it!”. I always knew it would be an unforgettable trip I just never thought I would crave the mountains afterwards. I can still feel the cool, crisp air that I inhaled when I walked to the porch to watch the sunrise.…
Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…
Growing up, having a parent in the military was kind of tough. Having to pack up everything and move. Especially when that parent was relocated to a new base. I 've settled down for a few years, not up and moving or anything. As soon as the service in the military was over and my parents had divorced I was right back up moving around.…
If you ever happen to catch me in a cut off you might see that on my left shoulder there is tattoo of mountains, pine trees, and five birds leading up to my collar bone. You might ask the meaning, or you might just tell me how much you like it and compliment the artist and ask me where I got it done or ask if I have any others. You might never see a goal as a reason to get a tattoo but Mountains are my goal. My family and I visited the Rocky Mountain National Park the summer after my Junior year in highschool. I had never seen a mountain before besides in pictures.…
I became more motivated by both the dangers and rewards of the fire service, and started looking at the fire service as a long term career in Littleton . For the past year I have been physically preparing myself for the fire service; by lifting weights, cardiovascular training, and eating healthy. I have been learning about how to conquer my moderate discomforts…
