I walk into the sweet fragrance of cinnamon. My mom greets me at the end of the hall. I kick my shoes off just to relax. I bolt up the stairs and smack the wall in my room to turn the fan on. I put my backpack down and go right back down the stairs. I sit on the couch and my mom is watching a tv show or movie. I go right back up the stairs and grab my huge soft comforter to watch with my mom. It doesn't matter if I don't understand the show I just ask my mom what's going on.
Then my grandma gets home and instantly starts to cook dinner. The aroma is so stunning that I can't wait until dinner. The food comes out and the london broil meat is cooked to perfection. I take a whiff and my grandma gently says “tell your brother and sisters dinner

Another hot summer in Idaho at another family reunion. I chased after my dad and brother’s cloud of dust; reving my ATV’s (all terrain vehicle) engine I whipped around the land my great great uncle homesteaded on. My confidence grew as did my speed until my wheel caught and spun me right into a log that pierced through the fender and into my leg. It was the first time I ever blacked out. When I came too a few seconds later I was alone; high on the trails of the Sawtooth mountains, blood gushing from my shin.…

It couldn’t have been past 10 a.m. when the alarm went off. We all knew what it meant- we were firefighters, it’s what we do. The fire chief told us that an apartment complex in downtown Boston had gone ablaze, and that it was really bad. We quickly got into our uniforms and hopped on as the fire truck left the station. We were a few miles away before I saw the smoke, a dark giant against the bright blue sky.…

I was 23 before I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. As far back as Elementary school I knew that there was something “off” in the way that I processed information. That my ability to do well academically was somehow hindered by not having certain tools that I needed, tools I wasn’t even aware existed. In high school, I began to augment my deficits with strengths. Where my grades were lacking I made up for it through creativity; I excelled at art and photography.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…

There is nothing greater than helping your grandparents on their large ranch in the middle of Kansas. That was what I was thinking as I hopped on my grandmother Patrice’s horse named Watermelon. My mother told me, my grandparents owned a gigantic ranch, so I instantly wanted to come out and help them and learn about cattle.. They had a bunch of cattle on their farm that they have to care for everyday, so I decided to assist them with caring for their animals. Once I climbed back up on my horse, I rode up to my grandpa Jim, who was waiting for me on his horse.…
