Personal Narrative: Career Of Mental Health Counseling

Decent Essays
The exploratory was probably the essay I struggled with the most. But it was probably the most beneficial to me at the same time. Because I was undecided, I haven’t even really looked much into any majors or even careers. For the essay, I chose to examine the career of mental health counseling. It was hard to make a choice on what career because I really had none in mind. So this essay really made me sit down and consider what career path I may want to go down. After finishing my essay, I actually found myself really considering psychology as my major. And I have since changed my major from undecided to psychology. So this really pushed me to want to join this profession. In regards to actually writing the paper, I struggled a great amount

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

It takes a passion for learning, determination, and the ability to make the most of what you have. For that you are required to take seven college level courses, a two hour lab for all science classes, conduct six-weeks of summer research and still participate in extracurricular activities. Counselors have the responsibility of working with clients one on one, and also collaborating with other professionals that could benefit the best interest of their clients. Counselors need to acknowledge and respect the professionals that have their own specializations and understand that often times in human services, we never solely work on our own. In this situation, a Child Life Specialist would be an example of a professional with whom I could collaborate with in the future. Child Life Specialists (CLS) would be an excellent group of professionals to collaborate with as Mental Health Counselors. CLS have the difficult role to work with children in hospitals and support them through the process of fighting diseases and illness while trying to cope with many other factors that affect them within this process.…

It was sometimes hard to think of the right topics that I was able to write 5-6 pages about. I did research and made lists of things that I was going to be able to elaborate on and overall create a decent paper. On the definition essay, I should have chosen a better topic other then, “Dreams.” Of course we all know about dreams, but it was hard to define it, when it could mean two different things. I ended up writing about both of the meanings, which didn’t end up so well.…

In the end, I passed my exams and I hope to pass this one too. Writing essays when I was younger flourished my passion for writing. The thrill of capturing the attention of the audience with my words and conveying my imagination to reality always left me feeling like the Michelangelo of literacy. The essay writing competitions I participated in also boosted my confidence in unearthing the talent and skill within me. The pen is truly mightier than the sword, for my journey is proof that capturing the activities of the human mind using words is not a mean feat.…

Crippling fear of the unknown accompanied by the feeling of being in a pit full of water barely able to keep my head above the water. This is how I would describe the condition that has been a part of my life since before I knew that mental illnesses weren’t limited to schizophrenia. Long before I could even imagine all the predicaments I would go through during the years that were yet to come. A feeling of utter hopelessness made way for thoughts that no nine year old child should have. As I battled through childhood, adolescence and now face adulthood still plagued by depression, the thought of abandoning all my hopes and dreams has been one of the few immutable characteristics of my life.…

My mother has been receiving treatment for diabetes for many years now. A few years ago, my mother called me while I was away at school. She told me she was excited because she had been referred to a new endocrinologist who had taken the time to help her understand what was going on with her body in her language. He outlined a plan of care with her that would take her through the next few years. Step by step, he would work with her to manage the effects that diabetes had already caused and would try to prevent any further exacerbations of the disease.…
