Cali and I have been best friends since kindergarten and now we’re 14, I guess you could say we’re basically sisters, We would do anything for each other no matter what…
The sunlight covered the sky in a yellow light, I knew today was gonna be a good day. Today Cali was coming over for the last time before school started and this would be the way to make it a good year.

Her car pulled up to my house, she walked in and we sat on the couch. Later Cali and I were watching TV like we would normally do. She said she could hangout besides tonight and tomorrow which was peculiar because we're basically always with each other. She didn’t talk really and she went to bed pretty early, I was thinking it could be because school started next week and she wants to get on the regular schedule.

When she left I was trying to recall what she may have told.

A week later I noticed I wasn’t receiving any calls or texts, no knocks on the door, or a shout through my bedroom window from Cali. I noticed things seemed different around the neighborhood and Cali’s house always seemed dark, I went over to Cali’s neighbor's house, (which they lived down the road) because it didn’t seem like Cali was home, I knocked on their neighbor's door. Mrs. Neil answered, I was quick to say have you seen the Willson’s, she turned a smile into a frown and said “they moved yesterday, and no one knows why”

Lemoore, California. The 559, the 93245, the small rural town located in the central region of the San Joaquin Valley. A place that will melt flip flops to the ground in the summer, yet it will have people gathering around a fire in the winter with their hands wrapped tightly around a steaming cup of cocoa. Not much goes on in this town and it is not quite what someone would call a vacation destination, but there is indeed something special about this town. This special characteristic is the way religion connects and creates a family out of the majority of people who live in this town.…

One of the first things I remember about going on that trip is looking down at my feet and thinking that I would die if I fell. I was nine and very light-headed at the time. It was the winter of 2009 and one of the first times I had ever gone to Colorado. The drive there took about 6 hours from our house so you can imagine my excitement at finally getting out of the car as an inpatient nine-year-old. We were renting a small two story log cabin with a hot tub on the second- floor balcony from a family that had a winter home somewhere in Florida.…

A universal theme for me moving from Texas to California is overcoming. I was 8 years old when my family moved, and had to overcome knowing no one, a new school, and being out of my comfort zone. At this age you tend to start making good friends, all hang out in groups, and be less adventurous. My parents kept saying, “Find people who like the same things as you, and everything else will be easy”. The next week I did just that.…

People everywhere go through various experiences in their lives. Whether these experiences are big or small, they affect us in some way. The results of these experiences can be good or bad, or a little bit of both, but either way they shape our lives. The biggest life experience I’ve ever gone through is my move to California. Although this only happened about a year ago, it was a huge change for me because I left so much behind for an unknown future.…

The University of Southern California is a top notch facility with premier applicants from every corner of the world, each with something that is essential to understanding them. As for myself, I feel as if my story would not be complete without telling the tale of my rural upbringing. Coming from a modest town of 2,144 residents in northwest Indiana, my day to day experiences have been a lot different than those I would encounter in Los Angeles, California. While going from being surrounded by people who ride their donkeys to school to being surrounded by people who ride their long boards to school would be quite a culture shock, it is exactly the type of adjustment I need to transition into my adult life. Although the environment I grew…

Growing up in Southern California we spent most of our summers at Lake Havasu and Parker. For as long as I can remember, getting to spend my summers on the lake with my close friends and family was what got me through the school year, knowing that for a full month I would have no cares in the world except for what adventures lay ahead of us. As the school year came to an end, all we could think about was getting to the lake to start our last summer together before we all ventured off in separate directions. Starting to pack and load up the RV was all I could think about for days, seeing as this was the last summer we would all spend together.…
