Personal Narrative: Cajn Giraffes

The air was crisp; dew dripped off of the freshly mowed lawn. A slight breeze swung me softly side to side. There I was, on the ragged concrete steps, leaning morosely aside the brick pillar. It was a beautiful day, but the atmosphere surrounding me was miserable. Impatiently tapping my foot, I looked up and down the street to see if my friends were near. As I turned my head right, a single tear fell from my face making an imperfect circle between my dirt-coated Converse; I saw them just as they had seen me. I stood up and wiped my face while they sprinted towards me.
By this point, I had been living in Oregon for a year, but in that time, I had made many close friends. This was my goodbye. People I had spent cherished time with gathered together, and we decided to walk down to the shopping center half a mile away from my house.
After nearly being hit by several cars on the way there, we packed into the bar seating outside of our favorite restaurant: Cackalack’s. They had the best Cajun seasoned fries I have ever had with just the right amount of tang and spice. This was tradition. We

Even though the group was close-knit, and practically its own family, Sidian was my dearest friend. The entirety of the note was her expressing how much she would miss me and how much we should stay in touch. These were all things I had heard from the rest of my friends, but she had formed a pact with me as well. The promise was that once we graduate high school, we would meet up in Cackalack’s and order a half-basket of Cajun fries to share, just as we had before. Neither of us have money, or any means of transportation, but this was hope. Hope that we could be reunited. Hope that we could prance around the tiny shopping center in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, and be how we were, even if it’s for a few days, the nostalgia of it all pulsing through our

The morning breeze that was supposed to be inhaled with peace and be enjoyed with a glass of tea and some doughnuts around the dining table along with the loved ones, family, and friends just outside the small lovely house of two stories with flowers around its walls, running up to its roofs, was mixed with smoke and chemical odors that either left the heart of a living being in a state of unease or take its state of living from it, and left the house divided against…

Wrinkling his nose, he walked into the room and pulling back the curtains, he threw open the window. A blast of warm spring air wafted into the room, the channel of air rhythmically caving and billowing the sheer drapes. He breathed deeply, the scent of hickory and oak intermingled with exhaust fumes preferable to the musty smell inside the room. He couldn’t remember the last time Tom had showered, and it showed. But all that was about to change.…

Buildings were abandoned almost daily, and as a result, empty lots sprawled over the city like weeds in gardens. Dark clouds had permanent residents in the sky, no matter the season. News of violent deaths were commonplace, and every time one was announced, you only hoped and prayed it wasn’t someone you knew. For almost half of my life, that environment was an aspect of my very being.…

Death rented the air. Although the abandoned town appeared utterly hollow, one flame still burned amidst the impending shadow. A young adolescent girl sat upon the baked doorstep of a dusky house, motionless, dismal, like a withered bush pelted by the onslaught. Even so, she remained alive, grim, silent, and still.…

All the pictures, articles, and news reports could not have prepared my soul from the heartache of what it was about to witness. Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath left nothing but devastation in her path, leaving ghost towns for neighborhoods, homes dilapidated, and with resilient locals determined to overcome. As I slowly drove down the first hauntingly, quiet, empty street, I could not help but feel my shiny car was grossly out of place. As I turned the key abruptly to quiet the engine I used to think so gently purred, I closed my eyes and pictured how this once bustling, busy neighborhood used to look and sound.…

I ambled around my family's spacious property, the same property I had traipsed around almost every day in my life. I had walked this property feeling elated, dejected, and even puzzled, but today I was feeling as aggravated as I feel when a teacher gives out homework on a sunny day. I would have much rather been inside my comforting house, eating a delectable dinner, as delicious to me as any five star restaurant, with my family, than looking for my annoying brother. Through our dense treeline, I yet walked, to our mystical pond. Dodging the constant tree branches, I became more and more irritated.…
