My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. I interview a teacher named Alice Jones who works at a suburban private school called Horizon Academy in Roleland Park Kansas. Currently Mrs. Jones teaches middle to High school grade levels and is a homeroom teacher for seven eighth grade boys. I went from an exceptional student to one who talks back. Since freshman year Mrs. R had been my favorite teacher, even though I did not have her until I was a junior. When I began Energy Express, I thought my role would be improving children's reading skills and helping them cultivate a passion for reading. However, throughout my summer of service I learned that the role of an Energy Express mentor is much greater.
