Personal Narrative: Break-Up

Improved Essays
Break ups between friends can sometimes end up being more difficult than the separation with a significant other. When I was in high school, I found myself in a mildly toxic friendship. I met her in the seventh grade and while at that time I found her to be one of my best friends, as we got older the friendship began to grow more strenuous. Occasionally it turns out that people can end up being a completely different person than who you think they are. When I was sixteen years old, I realized just how tough it was to maintain a true friendship when the girl that I thought was one of my closest friends became somebody I felt I didn’t even know. During my junior year of high school, I was going through a pretty tough time with a bad break up, and though you’d think that you can turn to one of your friends …show more content…
It started to seem that maybe she had some jealousy towards me, because she would continually go out of her way to try to embarrass me. It was like she thoroughly enjoyed making fun of me and every single thing that I would do or say. This really began to bother me and get under my skin, but like always I just dismissed the issue. Brushing it off my shoulders didn’t seem to solve anything though, it never ceased. She just kept bringing me down and making me feel worthless, it seemed my biggest insecurities would easily be pointed out at any given moment. One day, everything I have held in for so long came bubbling out. I had finally realized that I’ve kept this “friendship” going long enough. I was tired of being treated as if I were garbage, when that was the last thing I deserved, especially from someone I’ve done so much for. I told her exactly how some of her words made me feel and what she has done to hurt me. She was in denial that she ever did anything wrong, so after a long dispute, we decided to part

Another one my closest friends did not speak for almost 4 months, we did not argue or anything, Folger et al. (2013) argues that “behavioral responses to hurt may be similar to those for anger, but also include acquiescence to the other’s behavior and expressions of invulnerability” (p. 50); I agree with this because after noticing that she stopped answering my calls or text me back, I got tired of it, my hurt turned into anger and then just let it go. On my birthday she called, & I ignored it; however, I listened to the voicemail, because I knew her so well, I could tell something was not right. I could no longer be upset with her on my birthday and I was afraid that something might wrong.…

When I was five years old I began taking karate lessons, I likely started taking these to get out of the house more and make friends. Growing up homeschooled, I didn’t and still don’t have a large amount of acquaintances, or friends as many call them. Thanks partly to my karate lessons; however, I was able to make some excellent friends, the strongest friendship I forged over the years, both in and out of karate lessons was with Kyle. Yes, me and Kyle, almost exactly the same age (he was older by approximately three weeks), would build a fantastic friendship of solid gold, until the pressure of moving away and the both of us changing as we grew older crushed it back into the dust we started with. Regardless of the dramatic ending, we hit it…
