Personal Narrative: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu And Judo

Have you ever had to fight someone before? Okay, maybe not a schoolyard brawl, but sparring with someone in a martial art. That is what I do twice every week because I take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. I have been taking it for almost a year now, but I occasionally still feel a little uneasy when I battle against higher ranked opponents. But when I first started, I was extremely nervous, as a consequence, I wanted to drop out of the class early.

It was April of 2017 when I started Judo. I remember seeing kids with much higher belts than me. As a result of that, I was intimidated by the bigger and higher ranked students. I was puzzled and was unaware of the procedures. But then a Sensei took me and a few other new students to a downstairs area. We learned the basics of Judo as well as the rules. I made 2 friends on that first day, so I felt less alone in the class. When that second class rolled around I felt slightly more confident and courageous. My Skepticality had lingered for about a month before I became comfortable though.

It was very different from Judo. In Judo, you learned about throwing and pinning your opponent. But in BJJ, I learned how to execute submissions on people (choke holds, armbars, etc.) Submissions were forbidden in Judo but they were allowed in BJJ, therefore I struggled a little bit when I sparred with opponents. I picked up on Jiu Jitsu faster than I did Judo but I personally thought it was too

Children and Teen’s Kickboxing Tournament It was 6:00 pm on a Wednesday and the kickboxing tournament that featured a family friend’s son, a teenager that had been in MMA since he was 5, was starting in an hour. I was already mentally and physically drained from working a full day at the office and considered not even attending. I mentioned this to my sister, the mother of my beloved blue-eyed big-hearted niece Maliah, and she too was debating on whether or not to go. Then she said something that sort of caught me off guard - "You know, kickboxing is so violent.…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

Tae Kwon-Do has played a massive part in my life over the last four years and has helped me achieve things I would never dream of being able to do, for example it has helped improve my confidence greatly. I want to be able to help lower grades discover a side of them they didn’t think they had just as my instructors did with me.…

There was one man that stucked out to me that made me think of the performative theory on page 55 in chapter 2. I was contacted by my old coding teacher and received the opportunity to assist her in leading this year’s coding program. Although I knew I wasn't the best at coding, I saw this offer as a chance for me to learn more about it while sharing the little that I knew with others. During last year's program I got the opportunity to create my own games/programs/apps, and I learned more about JavaScript and its role in businesses. With this information I realized that knowing at least basic code is necessary in this day in age, especially if one was to pursue a career in a field of or relating to technology. At first, I was surprised to see that many of the students who attended this year’s coding program were around my age…

Mixed martial arts have a stigma both to its athletes and the sport. People view it as a blood sport and often compare it to gladiators fighting to the death. Back in the early nineties this was common among society, but today most people accept it as a sport just like boxing. However, there are still people, most likely the older generations, which view it as a blood sport, or two men rolling around on the ground.…
