Personal Narrative: Boy Scouts

Decent Essays
Boy Scouts was initially something that I never truly expected to enter my life. The most exposure I had of it was cartoonish representations that I would see in the funnies section of the newspaper or spoofs of the organization in my daily cartoons. This all changed when my friend one day invited me over to one of the weekly meetings. I was a little scared at first, a group of people I didn’t know was frightening to my middle school self. But for some reason; I’m not sure now if it was the friendly scouts, or the exuberant leaders, I decided to join. This inadvertently changed who I would be throughout the rest of my schooling years. Looking back from my senior year, I can see how scouting has influenced my decisions and choices throughout high school. During high school, I picked up various leadership positions that I don’t believe I would have felt prepared for if not for the experience I gained from my troop. Currently, I’m the president of the Young Buddhist Association group in my district, Vice President of the Konawaena Leo Club, former historian for my school’s Japan Club, and I was chosen to be a youth ambassador to Hiroshima, Japan in 2016. Many of these things that I put myself into came from the confidence I …show more content…
I hope to major in pre-law and go to law school after. Although I’m not sure what field of law I want to specialize in, I know that my main goal is to make a positive impact to people who need help that they aren’t able to supply themselves with. During or after schooling, I would want to still keep in contact with scouting, whether it be helping out when I make my summer trips home, or possibly even lending a hand to the local troops in the area. Something that I learned from my years in scouting is making sure to give back. I want to be able to do this for my home, and the organization itself since both have been an indispensable asset to my

Joining the Cub Scouts program in first grade put me on track to join the Boy Scouts of America, which at age eleven, I transitioned into, thus beginning my journey towards achieving the coveted pinnacle of the scouting program: Eagle Scout. Obtaining the Eagle rank is a long and difficult process, building within the scout strong traits of leadership, teamwork, and individual growth mindset, because progression is up to the scout. If it’s something they really want, then they will go after it and do what needs to be done. which are all essential elements in life. As progression through scouting occurs, individuals accumulate valuable experience working as a team given that the structure of the troop derives from small groups of six to eight…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

The President of Boys Thinking that I was going to have to become the “leader,” or otherwise correct form as, “President,” as a calling from my bishop sent chills through my blood and my heart pounding. I knew that there would be a new president called since our previous one moved away sadly as he was a friend, but I didn’t really think of being called. I was called to be the president of the deacon’s quorum. It was a sunny day and church had just ended and I was walking through the hallways of the building that had half white walls, a brown wooden chair railing across the middle, and a rough, hairy tan colored wall as the other half.…

When I first heard about the American Legion, I was as curious as I was scared. I was expecting tested war veterans who questioned my patriotism. I was optimistic when I arrived at Rider and immediately started talking about my favorite soccer team with a member. I was attending boys state as an educational opportunity into politics and definitely an enjoyable week to start my summer off with. The awkwardness felt around the campus was at a level I have rarely experienced.…

Others, like me, see the greater benefits in the scouting program that a lot of people fail to notice. It’s hard to speak for other troops around the country and in the world, but lately in my home unit, I’ve been noticing a steady decline in the number of scouts in the troop. This is a problem that we as a unit are trying to solve. When you’re younger, it’s slightly easier to talk to friends…

These young men learn an abundance of skills and traits that set them apart from society. This group is known as Boy Scouts has been a massive influence for me and has developed me into the person I have become today. Going from when I was young and was learning how to build a fire, tie knots, or teaching me leadership skills, Scouting has refined me into a more confident and stronger person. Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. At first I thought that it was like any normal 3- day camping trip, which made me extremely excited since I enjoy camping very much. Once I got there, I realized that it was a different type of camp. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing. The reason I’m writing this is because I learned so much about being open minded, accepting, and kind to other people and new experiences.…
