"Tell me what led up to all this," the therapist sitting across from me says. I sigh and pull at the sleeves of the white cotton shirt the hospital requires all psych patients to wear. "Well I guess it started that morning...my mom started yelling at me about not putting my dishes away. She says something like that pretty much every day, but that day it affected me more than usual. I went to school. My friends were being weirdly obnoxious and they seemed irritated with me. I tried to ignore it, but by the time we got to lunch I couldn't take it anymore. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety 4 years ago, which they don't know, but they always treat me like an outsider so I wasn't ever going to tell them. I tried

"Suicide attempt, long-term depression, and anxiety. You?" I respond blankly. "Borderline personality disorder. Looks like we're stuck together now. May as well show you around," she says as she stands up and opens the door. It seems like I might be making friends already. The first thing we encounter is a guy Brie seems to know. "Who's the new anorexic?" he says snarkily and suddenly he wraps his arms around his head. "This is Will. He has Tourettes. Ignore everything he says. Will this is Kat. Depression," Brie says. "Sorry about that. The treatment helps for the most part, but not always. Your eyes look like the ocean," Will says. "The three musketeers. How nice. Let's go, I'm starving," Brie says while walking towards the cafeteria. Once we have our food and we're all sitting down, we start getting to know each other. "Why did you try to kill yourself, Kat?" Will asks. Brie rolls her eyes. "It's the Tourettes. But I would like to know myself if you don't care," she says gently. "Part of it was the depression.
