Sister Erica remembered the night before the bombing vividly. She’d been outside on the cement patio picking up toys that needed put away. She recalled that the sky was beautiful, and the stars were bright. Erica was a strong woman, who had emigrated from Germany a few years earlier. At the Fountain, she had been in charge of the Nursery on the Hill. She was very responsible but quite stern. Looking up to the sky that night, she reflected on her life and felt satisfied about her job. Erica loved those children under her care. Maybe not in the way a parent loved, but nonetheless, she loved them, which was ironic because not only didn’t she have children of her own, but she also did not have a desire to have any of her own. The children looked lost and alone, and just when the sirens would die down and stop blasting, they would all of a sudden start blasting again. After a while, Erica became concerned for the children and went back to check on them. She saw the girls, but did not see the boys. Then suddenly the boys came in an opposite door, which was the front door of the lower dining room. Just as she started to go over to the boys, one of the little girls raised up her shirt and showed Erica a deep burn. Soon the brothers came in and said they had been to the Headquarters, and everyone’s suspicion was confirmed—the Headquarters was on fire. The brothers said it was bad, and that not one wall was standing. Everyone was stunned and confused and wondered how something like that could have happened. Erica and the others felt this was a good sign that everyone must have made it out. This also confirmed what the children had said about seeing Nekona and …show more content…
No one had an answer, so Erica decided to take care of the children’s needs herself. She decided to set up a place up in the Nursery with the babies and preschoolers until they all could figure out something else. Her main goal was to get the children situated. Sister Muriel and the others agreed this was the best possible solution. When Master was done dealing with the fire, then he could decide about other arrangements for the children, but for right now, they needed her attention. Sister Walli had extra clothing that the children could wear, and there would be donations that would come
