I remember the first day of middle school as a sixth grader. I was nervous yet excited to meet new friends, though I’m not the best at it. I would head to the cafeteria every morning as soon as my dad dropped me off. My friends and I along with many other students would gather around the cafeteria before class starts, but far across the table I was sitting was a different table. That table had students that seem to me, very uncontrollably hyper and obnoxious but isolated. There was one student that seem disappointed and upset, and looked like she was forced to get out of bed at two in the morning. I didn’t know much about why those students are isolated from us and can not learn in the same environment as us. But what I knew was, I met that one student sitting alone in that group because she was in my physical education class. …show more content…
She associated with no other besides myself, and I wanted her to be comfortable around me before I try to know anything else about her in particular. I still remember that Wednesday morning during our 3 lap exercise, she told me “ I have bipolar disorder, that is what makes me different from the rest. Can’t you see how abnormal I am?”. I didn’t know what bipolar disorder was at the moment so I couldn’t respond, so she left without notice. I came home later that day and asked my sister, “What is Bipolar Disorder?”. I was able to talk to Brittany the next day and told her I could careless about what she thinks about herself, I want to be a friend to her. Our relationship grew throughout the year and I became more observant of my surroundings ever since I wanted to know why Brittany isolated herself from others and why others decide to keep her

However, as I headed into grade 12, things began to change. I had never experienced any kind of uneasy feelings in class or any kind of alienation from other students. When I first got a taste of an unwelcome vibe was in a class called Indigenous Studies 30. I had been in Indigenous Studies before because it was a very hands on and visual class, which how I learned best. However, the first day of this class felt different from past years.…

X was a bright, ambitious and energetic person, and he was loved by everyone alike. After years of hard work, he’d gotten into law school and was finally living his dream he had struggled so long for. He was also my best friend. When I came back home from college that year, I was met with somber and anxious faces rather than smiles and hugs. Blankly, I looked at my father’s face when he broke the shocking news that X had passed away from a drug overdose.…

I sigh and pull at the sleeves of the white cotton shirt the hospital requires all psych patients to wear. She says something like that pretty much every day, but that day it affected me more than usual.…

There were two sections that I enjoy reading was “The About Mental Illness,” and “Personal Stories”. The tab “The About Mental Illness” let me see that there are different kind of mental illness and it just not about a person being crazy and talking to imagination people even though this is what the society see or know when it comes to asking what is mental illness. This tab let me see that mental illness can be internal and the person who has it is just normal just like everyone. Those that do have mental illness will not tell others that they are have it because of discrimination and how the society will treat or view them which leads to the next tab “Personal Stories.” The tab “Personal Stories,” lets me get to read what they go through…

My experience in hell felt ridiculously timeless, therefore, I knew this couldn’t have been a schizophrenic episode. I often wondered if perhaps I hadn’t passed through time for that long at all and if time remained nothing but a vague feeling. If that was so, that was the worst episode ever. Nevertheless, I’m doubtful. The burns, the slashes, the bites are hardly memorable, but I've always remembered the words.…
