Personal Narrative: Bilingualte In Spanish

Improved Essays
For almost two decades I have known that I wanted to be a doctor. However, seven years ago I I decided that I wanted to be fluent in Spanish so that I may treat those whose first language is Spanish. While volunteering at the New York Hospital of Queens, I got to experience first hand a Hispanic family who spent approximately 12 hours in a waiting room due to the language barrier. I have seen patients before waiting for a long period of time, but this was the longest. In that moment, I felt sympathy for that family. They were unable to receive medical service in a prompt manner due to a language barrier that they had no control over. Thus, began my pursuit to becoming fluent in Spanish.

According to migrationpolicy.org, about 316 million U.S. residents are immigrants, and that number is only going to go up. When they arrive in the U.S., their adjustment is fraught with challenges. The most pressing one being learning the language and adapting to the cultural differences between America and their native country. Language and culture affects the way one interacts with family, the public, and can alter how one views their identity. Three texts that will be utilized in support of this are Aria: Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood by Richard Rodriguez, Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, and The “F” Word by Firoozeh Dumas.…

Through the years, I have moved to almost 3 culturally different countries, my experiences have been nothing less of hectic. From changing to country to country to school to school. I have be-friended people from all around the world and have managed to gather a few bits and pieces from each of their cultures. It is so fascinating finding out about traditions around the world. To strive in a multi-cultural atmosphere would obviously be tough, but I have thankfully done it more than once.…

This mistake that I’m writing about took a rather long time to learn that it was a mistake. Ever since I was a child my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. Probably due to the fact that my family is Spanish and that half of my relatives speak Spanish only. I never got into learning Spanish, and well they couldn’t blame me, I only started speaking English when I was six. Before that I was using basic sign language which I have now forgotten.…

Supreme Court Justice and Latina woman, Sonia Sotomayor once stated, “The Latina in me is an ember that blazes forever.” After given much thought on what it means to be an Idaho Latina, I could not think of how to describe the feeling or how one thinks, acts, and lives. I feel like I haven’t found my place in the Hispanic population in school even though I am full Hispanic. I don’t speak Spanish fluently, I am at a different academic level than other Hispanics, and I have different interests. Yet the “ember still burns inside me”, thanks to my padres and my abuelos I know what is like to be an Idahoan Latina.…

I’m pursuing a Spanish and biology double major with a psychology minor - I propose that my directed study be a combination of all of these things: I would like to learn how to communicate effectively and respectfully in the medical field to spanish speaking individuals. I plan on studying how Spanish speaking individuals and families approach medicine, how living in the United States makes receiving medical care difficult, and ways to make Spanish speaking individuals and families more comfortable in a mostly english speaking country while pursuing medical advice. I will study medical Spanish with Dr. Mark McGraw. I plan on first studying the problems that are encountered when Spanish speaking individuals are in a medical field, how spanish…

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…

The primary argument that Richard Rodriguez addresses in Aria: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood is the issue of bilingual education in America. He claims that he can’t be fully merged in American Society due to his “private” life, in other words his second language. Rodriguez also claims that because his original language is not the same as the “public” language, he is unable to create intimacy with someone who speaks a different language other than the public one. Lastly, he claims the use of a native language is impossible to have coexist with the “public” language. “It is not possible for a child, any child, ever to use his family’s language in school” (Rodriguez 448).…

Statistics show that the Mexican-American race has the highest number of people that populate the United States, and this demographic continues to grow even more. A Mexican-American is an American of full or partial Mexican decent. My parents, both born in Mexico, migrated to the United States in search of a better future for themselves and children. Because of my Hispanic roots, and my birth in the U.S., I am considered a Mexican-American. As a result of my equivalent exposure to two different cultures, I grew up being bilingual.…
