How we were going to raise donations was left to decide between myself and the rest of the Beta Club officers, so all final decisions and deadlines were mine to decide. Growing up I was constantly reminded to do more than whats expected by many women in different time of my life. I often heard my teachers refer to each other sorrors and addressed jokes about the strange embroidered letters on their jackets. Being only 10 and curious, I wanted to know the significance and meaning of the strange letters and defending them was so important. The conversation grew broader than the letters. I was informed about Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and the importance of taking risk, speaking up, sisterhood, and going beyond measure to ensure the needs of other were met.…

Although you have to be 36 years old to legally become the president of the United States, I feel as if I’ve experienced an aspect of presidency in my fourteenth year of living. Of course, it is obvious that being president of my middle school’s National Junior Honor Society is nowhere near being the president of the United States. But in fact, my experience depicts a quite harrowing and concerning aspect of presidency. In an interwoven city and school, creating close relationships was inevitable.…

Being Ethiopian and having lived there before, I’ve always wanted to give back. Habesha Leadership, a club dedicated to bringing awareness and helping Ethiopian and Eritrean countries, gave me a platform to do so. Previous years, we have done book drives, and last year we even made and sold chapstick as a collaboration with GirlUp, an international organization that helps girls in underdeveloped parts of the world. This year, as the president, I wanted to take the community service aspect to the next level. I had visited Ethiopia last summer and got in contact with an orphanage that helped kids go to school.…

My administrative project goal focused on collaboration and working on our curriculum with my English department 9-12. Personally, this has been an area that I wanted to focus on for years because I felt that each ELA teacher was not able to move forward when it came to developing a viable curriculum. As teachers, we were planning on an individual grade level, but we were not specifically aware of what our colleagues were doing. For example, questions like: How much research was being done with students? , Who was practicing the skill of close reading?…

In High School I was given the task along with a select group of students, to be curators for a Holocaust museum presented by the 10th-grade class. It was a large undertaking put upon a small group of 10th graders but we felt confident. Our grade depended on the performance and outcome of the event as a whole. Leading up to the event things seemed to go smoothly and well organized but it was later known that many of the selected curators would not have been able to attend the event. Out of the 10 chosen only 5 were able to attended and it was definitely a setback.…

As I have progressed through my high school years, I have been extremely fortunate to have been exposed to and to have experienced multiple leadership roles within the organizations at my school. With that said, I have discovered that possessing a leadership position is more than just a role, but the qualities that support it. One recent event occurred when this year's cheerleading sponsor anointed the honor of directing this year's Senior Pep Rally to the Senior class Officers. Under normal circumstances, we would have accepted and executed the plan with ease, but, considering the short notice was two weeks prior to the actual date and not a single Senior knew about it, we were forced to take immediate action. Unfortunately, due to…

The day was March 6, 2015: the second day of the Regional Beta Club Convention. Anticipation had my stomach in knots as I sat in the lobby, fiddling with my thesaurus, waiting for the time when we would be called into the conference room. I wanted to feel the glory of coming in first place, not only for my club and for my school, but for myself.…
