Improved Essays
As I drove through Belden Village on what was a very pleasant February night, there was a different atmosphere than that of the previous months. Excitement filled the air as it was the beginning of a new era. As I passed the Chick-fil-a parking lot, I noticed that it was not filled to its usual capacity. Since I was born, New York City has been my life, my blood, and bones; I have grown and lived with many different people with different backgrounds. My neighborhoods have shaped me into who I am today, I am flexible and open, like raw clay, enough to be changed and formed. Then there is the Bronx, a borough of New York, where you have to be strong, or you will not survive, a place where all races are together, and everyone is noisy. I live in a community where there are mostly Hispanics, and where there are always car passing by and honking, during the day it is the only sound you can here, and ear-piercing bird calls, but during the night there is always some kind of party, either that or just really loud music. I have grown to get use…

Where I moved here from is a place that I am glad I got out of, I would’ve most likely be getting in all kinds of trouble there. Nolan county saved me from all that trouble.…

Growing up in one of the poorest regions of the United States has taught me two things; one, we are not defined by stereotypes, and two, hardships are made to be overcome. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Middlesboro, KY sits on the Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia border. The multicolored fall foliage and the vivid green mountains in the spring are disserved by the descriptor spectacular. My roots are firmly nestled in the Cumberland Gap where Daniel Boone started his journey to the West decades ago. I am proud to call myself an Appalachian-American.…

My residential community has had a great impact on me. The community provides an ideal atmosphere to meet a variety of people. Not only does the residential community promote diversity and inclusion, but it has also granted me the unique opportunity of leading in a college atmosphere. After arriving at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I started spending most of my time in the lobby because my room did not have air conditioning. While in the lobby, I met a racially and geographically diverse group of people.…

If you’re not from Michigan you might be wondering, “Where up north?” In Michigan we use “up north” as a term for the upper half of the mitten, I’d say from the top of the thumb up. The UP (Upper Peninsula) can be considered Up North but normally it's just the UP.…

Having a community where you can lean back on is one of the most important things that I have had in my life. The community I have always been involved in is sports but the one that impacted me the most was a community called drop-in soccer. At the rightful age of thirteen and three days, I learned of the fine line between what was and was not important in life. My home was a wind gust and a dirt road away from being burned down all while the next three years of my life were waiting two miles away. While juggling the events of the county fair on Saturday, August 17, 2013, I looked over my shoulder to see a sight I never wished to see, black smoke. A view seldom seen until then but everyone knew exactly what it was from and where it originated.…

Excited, nervous, and ready for this new adventure to make my first visit to Poplar Hill Farm, in Jefferson County, Mississippi. Who knew that this place in the backwoods of Jefferson County and I would have a love affair and that in a few years I would be asked to collaborate on a research project for the Poplar Hill School. Armed with hundreds of questions, anticipation and youthful curiosity, I was ready for this journey into the past. Open and receptive to all the stories, they were willing to share, trying to understand their life and the lives of their ancestors, what I did not know was the men I was about to interview over the next few days were the last two men to have known Delaney Jackson. October is usually the time of year when the intense heat of Mississippi is waning and cooler conditions are welcomed, but the heat of the summer was still intense.…

I had never been outside of Fairy Farm Land, but I'm pretty sure all the land outside of it was undiscovered. After all, there probably isn't any more than 500 people in the world.
