Personal Narrative: Being President Of The Sutherland Cancer Awareness Club

Improved Essays
The most challenging leadership role I have undertaken is being President of the Sutherland Cancer Awareness Club. This is my first year as President and the Club has created a goal of raising $2,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. I think this is achievable but will require a large amount of effort from each of the club's 55 members. The main difficulty is two-way communication with some members, particularly the younger students who are new to responsibility and don't always fulfil their commitments. I try to be a patient mentor and highlight the importance of persistent and consistent effort in achieving our goal. Another challenge I face is to find someone to take over from me once I graduate. This is the first year that the Club has grown

One of my most recent challenges that occurred this past year was taking on a regional level role as South Central Region Z-HOPE Coordinator. Before this appointment I have only served on a local level, only serving as Tamias for Psi Alpha Zeta Chapter since graduation in 2011. This experience has helped me grow as a leader in multiple ways. Since taking this role I am more aware of what I do well and what I do not too well. I am investing more time in my strengths and seeking guidance, from past Z-HOPE Coordinators, in my weak areas.…

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

Another time that I have taken a leadership role is when our sideline cheer team had a booth at the Water Festival. I took the morning shift and when I got there I had all of the materials but only me and my coach had shown up and she still had to head back to the school to get the things we were selling. So while she went and got the stuff I stayed at the booth and lead it by myself until my teammates came and helped. I decided to be a leader in this situation because I knew that it was what I had to do to help my coach out so that she could get her stuff done. I believe that by leading the booth for a few hours I helped my coach accomplish what she had to do for the day and helped my team by sitting at the booth fundraising to help pay for some of our debts.…

As I motioned for the pink fire trucks to park in the middle of the pink-themed festival, I could not help but feel pride in what the team and I had been able to accomplish. I got elected as Vice President of Leadership, and since then I have been continuously looking for new ways to better our chapter. Communicating directly with our members and answering all their wonders is very important for me, as well as maintaining a good partnership with them. As a legacy from previous officers, it is now my duty as a new officer to get new members involved too by giving them opportunities to help in whichever ways that they can. Additionally, I do acknowledge that learning leadership skills (like public speaking, time management, delegation, etc...) is imperative in order to become a good leader. For this reason, I enrolled in a leadership development course at my college called the “Student Leadership Institute” and for which I received credit.…

UC Essays 1. Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. 342 Some people believe that leadership is all about telling others what to do, but for me, it is primarily about being hyper-observant, and then stepping up to meet any need arises. This style has helped me while serving as the Vice-President of the Red Cross club at my school. I can still remember the day when my parents told me the phrase, “You are a leader, not a follower.” It was in kindergarden right after I told them about a few girls who were making fun of a friend of fine, and I decided to stop them and defend her.
