Being Me Influenced Myself
Even though my service learning was required, I was able to gain valuable information from the eighteen hours that I volunteered. Having been able to volunteer at Sky Oaks Elementary was not only a great experience but also gave me a greater understanding of Sociology (the concepts that we learned in class). During my service learning, I put to use most of the information that we learned in class so that I was able to understand the people around me. Having said that, I think that my social location affected my service learning experience at Sky Oaks. I believe that my social location of being shy had the greatest effect on my experience at Sky Oaks Elementary. My experiences at Sky Oaks were affected by me being an outsider, comfort levels, and my age.
Being an outsider affected my experience at Sky Oaks Elementary because some students had different expectations from me. If you are new to a place, it takes a while for the people around you to know you and understand you and you yourself adapt to the new situation and surroundings. When you work with kids almost the same age as you, they tend to ignore your instructions. When the students were in the lunch room, there was this one kid who kept pushing the table. I asked him in a nice way to stop and he did. But after a few minutes, he started pushing the table again. I said, “Can you please stop pushing the table?” He started blaming the other kids who sat with him. That boy was breaking folkways norms because he knew that he though he breaks the norm, there is no severe punishment. Significant of others is important in children because they learn to take the role of important people in their lives. It is easy for kids to listen and respect the elder than young
