Being an Individual Not a Label
As an experienced scuba diver, I have adjusted to one thing, swimming against the tide. I see a similar tide in high school, where people with comparable attributes tend to stick together, forming cliques, which reinforce stereotypes. Even though these social portrayals exist, I do not see myself fitting specifically into any one particular category. Throughout high school I have been true to my beliefs, and have set personal goals. I have achieved academic success in a very competitive high school, earned multiple varsity sport letters, and developed unique opinions. All together this makes me who I am, not a stereotype.
The idea of being socially categorized based on intellect or physical capability is an

When asked to define myself in one paper, I find it hard to show the details that I want to in the right light. When asked about my future after high school, I also have a hard time describing everything I want to get done because there are far too many things to name. The quote “ _____” (i want to be everyone and do everything and there isn’t enough life to do it all in) describes me to a tee, and I believe this college is the place I could do this in. Being a shy person for most of my life, many things were difficult for me. Specifically, last summer I had the opportunity for a summer job.…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

However, many people around me had; whether it was basketball, cheerleading, or track - they had found a purpose that drove them. High School Stereotypes

How someone acts in high school usually determines his or her friends, relationships, and even enemies. People with similar attributes tend to stick together, forming a clique, which reinforces stereotypes. The smarter kids are seen as “nerds”, the athletically and physically “superior” are seen as jocks, and the nonconforming unique thinkers are considered “rebels.” I personally do not see myself fitting specifically into one of these categories for a variety of reasons. I have the qualities of academic success in a very competitive high school, multiple varsity sport letters, and opinions that I am not afraid to voice that together make me unique from anyone else.…

My high school experience has been strikingly different than what I see on TV, in movies, or read in books. While I know some people at my school clearly identify with a single archetype, I feel that I cannot be characterized by any one of these labels: jock, nerd, or rebel. Rather, I am a unique mix of the qualities of all three. I am like a jock because I am serious about the sports in which I participate. I run cross country, winter track, and spring track.…

Stereotyping comes in many forms and fashions, first perceptions of things or people, racial or ethnic profiling, or opinions based on incorrect information or simply bad judgement. One advantage of a stereotype is that it enables us to respond rapidly to situations because we may have had a similar experience before. But there are many disadvantages to this issue besides racial or ethnic profiling, it makes us ignore differences between individuals; therefore we think things about people that might not be true, generalizations. Like the old saying, don’t judge a book by its cover. I view myself as a very detailed, organized, and very ambitious person.…

In life I have been told the quote, "It is our differences that make us the same." This quote did not have much connotation to me until I was in my sophomore year of high school. Throughout my childhood, my life has been nothing short of unique related to peers of my age. From the time I turned eight years old to now, I have seen my mother's mental illnesses in full effect such as her bi-polar episodes. I have seen an abuse of alcohol on an abnormal level, but I have always had my brother's back me through everything since my dad had moved to a different state and it was just us.…
