The first risk I ever took was the one that completely changed my life. My middle school band directors were discussing marching band. I asked when the meeting was, and so I went. I didn't know a single thing about marching band or what it even entailed. I joined on a whim because my friends were doing it, and I wanted something to do that summer.…
Today My wagon train and I are leaving Ft. Kearny in search of Courthouse Rock, but first we have reach the California crossing and cross the south platte river. The river is too wide to be bridged and to shallow for a ferry so we have to cross it by using the sandbars. When we got in the water one of the children from another wagon almost drowned because of the current. It took us 30 minutes to get from one end of the river to the other.…
Competition days are long and tiring, but always full of excitement. There is a process as to how the day will go depending on when we perform, where we have to travel, and many other aspects. Most of them start out the same way and go in a similar order every time, but there are always surprises that come along the way during these days. As the day starts on a competition Saturday, the Worthington Kilbourne Marching Band arrives normally in the late morning or early afternoon.…
These groups come in all shapes and sizes, from the kids who play Pokémon like it’s their job, to the popular kids that run the morning announcements of the school. This means marching band is a place for everyone to express himself or herself in any way, shape or form with no one to judge them. Vestavia Hills Rebel Marching Band last year had ten National Merit Semi-Finalist. I had the privilege last years to be the bands Homecoming King Nominee, which the band never gets to have. By have someone represent the band in a popularity based position or by its students being honored with excellent academics, marching band effects the school and students for the better and not just for what people chooses them to be.…
In high school, I remember where my biggest dream changed into a reality. I was a member of the Greenville High School Tiger Pride Marching Band. I played the alto saxophone. Unlike my bandmates, I did not know how to read music then. I played by ear, and whatever scale, jazz run, or chromatic I heard, I could play it back just like that.…
There are many sports in the world such as football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and etc. But my favorite personally is cheerleading which has been in the industry for almost 20 years now. Cheerleading has been one of my most favorite sports since I was 8. All of my brothers always loved to stay active so they always ended up on a football team.…
As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…
In my small town of Centre, Alabama, I had no pride. I did not think our school had amazing programs or good representatives at events. All this changed when I joined the high school marching band. We practiced hard and worked without stopping. I soon realized that Cherokee County has pride in at least one program, their marching band.…
The outdoor setting of marching band fosters the flashiness and untamed passion required to make an emotional bond with far-away audiences. Each year in my marching band, I embraced the opportunities to learn new show tunes and skills for front ensemble, bass drum, snare drum, and then tenor drums. My love for marching band has influenced my personal musical selections. My favorite band is the funky brasshouse trio, Too Many Zooz. I would love to form a musical group while in college.…
What does it take to make a marching band great? Pride! What? Pride! What?…
Marching Band was what I had been looking for my whole life, it was what defined me. Music has a way of spilling into my heart and expressing feelings I did not even know I could express. From the start of 6th grade, I joined band due to the fact that I loved music. I was about 12 or so and played the trombone, which was almost as big as me. So many kids had a new instrument in their hands; all showing the same emotion of excitement as me.…
Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument. Getting my first instrument was exciting, yet challenging at the same time. When I told my mom that I wanted to start playing music, I didn’t realize how hard it can truly be. I didn’t think of how much patience and time I would need to put into my practicing.…
"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…
People and music are inseparable as Macdonald (2008, 39) argues that ‘We are all musical. Every human being has a biological, social and cultural guarantee of musicianship.’ It is hardly possible to live without hearing music in daily life, and people has been building musical identity since they are born by negotiating through it. Thus, music is a significant matter in personal identity and analysis of one’s life can reveal one’s musical identity. This essay will demonstrate the analysis of my musical identity based on my life.…
To be in a marching band, one has to almost become one with the band. The instrument played is not a single aspect, but a part of a much larger whole that must be comfortable and confident together. When I first joined the band, I was not one of the more comfortable and confident people that fit in with everyone else. Most all band members are loud and proud of who they are, compared to myself, who always hid behind others and hated being the center of attention. However, almost everyone has that moment when they realize that everybody else is just as self conscious, just as scared, and just as awkward as they are.…
