8/19/2015: The social worker was asked by the nurse to assist a patient, per Dr. R. Sundaram. The patient was requesting a letter to state his competence in supervision of his two children. The Social Worker is not qualified to address a letter such as this and consulted her supervisor about this matter. The Clinical Services Officer, Nursing Service Director, LPN – Team Lead, Dr. R. Sundaram and the social worker met to discuss this patient’s case. It was substantiate that there is not enough evidence available to compose any type of letter addressing the issues that the patient required, because the patient has only been seen twice at our clinic and only first established care on 07/31/2015.…
I completely agree with you. I also felt the greatest challenge I will face will being able to receive sufficient funding. I found it interesting how you have witnessed policies, regarding funding, change without your knowledge. I'm sure it happens more often than we are aware of. I as well hope to be in a position that allows me to make changes to better serve my clients.…
Hi Verenice, I agree the that the major themes of the life course perspective are important to the social work practice because it is a framework for courses of life. As social worker we be knowledgeable about clients’ history. Through assessments we learn clients age, race, gender, culture, religion, educational background, work experience, marital status, and health issues. All of this information is important when considering the major themes and how they are vital to us as social workers. Knowing the clients’ past history, where and who they are in the present can help us empower them to be who what to be in the future.…
In the Human Services field I am very passionate about working with people in the deaf culture. I am passionate about working with this population because I know American Sign Language and I feel a connection to the community. Learning ASL took a long time and allowed me to be engaged in many events in the deaf community. I believe people in this population are not given nearly as much attention or opportunities as they should be. The lack of equal access to education, jobs, and basic interactions that hearing people take for granted is not fair and puts this population at a disadvantage therefore making it important for people to want to work with this group of people.…
Why do you want to become a Social Worker? At first when people ask me that question my first instinct is to say “ because I want to help people.” Well that’s pretty obvious right? If I didn’t want to help people then why am I becoming a Social Worker? To answer the question why do I want to become social worker I have to look at it in a different way.…
As I was reading the online lecture and the text book I found this chapter very informative because the materials I red happens to my daily life activities and know I look things differently since I started this class am able to think critically and more observant. As a Human service professional I will be working with clients on daily basis and through asking more information about the problem they need guidance with I will be finding gaining more knowledge. I can relate this by remembering that when my great grandfather went to be with the lord years ago I was a young girl and I actually didn’t know exactly what happened but my family told me he took his life. Now that am in this career path I think about my grandfather case and I want to…
I have chosen to enter the profession of social work because I want to help people who are suffering from mental illness and who are underserviced when it comes to getting help for mental illnesses. By working with a distressed person to become better, not only will I be able to enhance their life, but also the community will transform into a more positive place. I view transformation as a ripple effect, where changing the situation for one person eventually causes a change in the majority. This is especially true when it comes to mental illness and the stigma that surrounds it. I have been highly involved in mental health work on my college campus since my sophomore year.…
Nikki Hebert is a Social Worker who works at many different places. She works at Bayou Blue Elementary, Bayou Blue Middle School and many other places. Although Social Work is my minor and Criminal Justice is my major I have a deep passion for the field of Social Work. I was homeless at the age of four years old when my grandmother died. At that time I lived in the Queen Louise homeless shelter on Saint Croix for six months with mother. My father is an immigrant and my mother was a foster child. My mother was also in an abusive relationship for six years of my childhood.…
Running head: GSC VOLUNTEER FINAL 1 GSC Volunteer Final Teiona Schaaf University of Nevada, Las Vegas Running head: GSC VOLUNTEER FINAL 2 I was extremely apprehensive about giving time to an assisted living facility because of the stigma that surrounds the elderly. I felt that I was not cut out for work that involved the elderly. It has been almost a year of me volunteering with this demographic and I absolutely love it!…
1. Discuss why you want to be a social worker. What personal, academic, volunteer and/or work experiences have influenced this choice? If you have worked in other fields, please discuss the reasons for this change. I like to believe that I did not choose the social work profession, in fact, social work chose me.…
I enjoy my profession and the opportunity it has given me to grow and become a better person. I have had a great experience working closely with the Director of Special Education, district leadership members, teachers, counselors, psychologists, parents, related service and supportive staff I oversee to support students in Special Education. With my job role expanding over the past three years I have seen a greater need to apply for graduate school. I want to be able to improve and learn more about my job. Graduate school is the best option to move forward.…
Totally confused, I walked through the doors of the Meridian Behavioral Healthcare overwhelmed with anxiety and uncertainty. The orientation time was never communicated; therefore, there was no time set for arrival. Arriving at 8:00am, I waited patiently for instruction. After a couple hours of waiting, the treatment specialist escorted the intern students to an office to wait for the arrival of the Recovery Supervisor. It is clear the organization was not prepared for the internship.…
When I first decided to go back to college after being out for a number of years, I was not sure what I wanted to do. My husband and I discussed what field I should pursue and I decided to go into Social Work. Our lives are forever changed because of the decision. I started at the University of Mississippi in Tupelo in August, 2014. I felt that all the classes I took were very helpful in my pursuit of my education.…
This was the first time I have been the minority race/ethnicity for an extended period of time. When I first walked into the event, I was extremely uncomfortable because all of the other students awkwardly stared at me as if to say, “What is she doing here?! She is white and therefore cannot possibly be a follower of the Hindu faith!”. Once I introduced myself and got to know the other participants a bit, it became less awkward, and I felt more comfortable being the only student of my race. However, the element of discomfort was still present throughout the course of the event because I was unfamiliar with how the Aarti service worked and what I was expected to do during it.…
