Personal Narrative: Battle Of The Hall Stars

Improved Essays
When I think of the word “grit”, to me it makes me think of someone who has a great spirit, who is self-motivated and does everything they can to meet their goal. The one time that I can say that I had true grit was during the time when we all as a Housing and Residence Life department, took place in our annual event ‘Battle of the Hall Stars’. Battle of the Hall Stars is most likely the “Olympics” of Housing and Residence Life at the University of West Florida. There’s nothing but different events, from basketball, handball, obstacle courses, and much more. At the end of it all, everyone gathers together at the end, all the points are tallied up and the Hall Cup is presented to the best Residence Hall.

Grit can be described as having a lot of courage or bravery. Growing up I was always shy and scared to speak my true feelings to others. I was always afraid of people not liking me and not being accepted by others. Whenever someone would harass or make fun of me, I would get upset and simply walk away from the situation. I couldn't stand when others would laugh and make fun of me.…

The fact that grit is defined as being the strength of our character and that Marcus Crede believes this is neither important nor insightful is inane. Obviously, Crede is confused and must be introduced to the reality of grit. Grit has been proven a countless number of times to be an auspicious trait for succeeding. An example of this can be found on AmericanRadioWorks.org, where Angela Duckworth’s research implies that Community College students with the highest grit continue college, while the students with the least grit drop out. Crede’s argument is that Duckworth’s research is extremely exaggerated.…

Angela Duckworth, former middle school math teacher and now researcher and psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania who has popularized the term, and the researchers, and authors of and in these articles, speak about the positives and negatives of grit and why it should or should not be introduced into our school systems’ curriculums. Duckworth has seen things in her grade school students that made her wonder. It appeared that the children who struggled the most at the beginning of the school year would likely be at the bottom of the class at the end of the year, and that the kids who were more advanced would end the year…

It is true that not all humans have the same innate sense of grit like the anadromous salmon do, but that has not stopped some people from trying to integrate grit into the world. To produce better cadets for West Point, schools are starting to teach grit at a young age. An example of this is the marshmallow test done on preschoolers so measure their abilities in self-control. The children are promised two marshmallows if they can resist the temptation of eating one for a short amount of time. Their long-term goal, at least in the eyes of the children, is to get the two marshmallows but they have to refuse the impulse to eat the one right in front of them.…

An individual that's gritty doesn't let any obstacles or difficulties hold them back from accomplishing a desired goal. When a person has a growth mindset they are very grit because they maintain a long term persistence of effort . On the other hand , people with a growth mindset aren't similar to ones with a fixed mindset. Having a fixed mindset means that when an individual is faced with a problem or difficulty , instead of working at that the issue they would rather give up and never overcome the challenges. The article "Angela Duckworth and the Research on Grit" by Emily Handford, she described being gritty as "tendency not to abandon tasks in the face of obstacles" ( pg. 51).…

In sdgva.org’s article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-Term Goals,” Angela Duckworth explores grit, which is a quality that allows one to achieve their goals through dedication, perseverance, and focus. Although grit is a trait that may take years to perfect, individuals who possess the quality stay true to their goals, despite hardships and failure. Studies have shown that gritty individuals stay focused on one goal at a time, whether it be starting a certain career, or finishing a certain number of years of education. On the other hand, individuals who do not possess the quality change their minds more frequently when it comes to career paths and education. Duckworth argues that grit is equally, if not more important than natural…

Does it give us the qualities we need to achieve the future we imagined as little kids? Grit is the persistence and perseverance us humans have to not just give up, but reach out and seize our long term goals. One of the most human reactions for people who have grit is refusal to lie down and let disasters win. I am going to be discussing and giving my opinion on the grit that Mrs. Duckworth’s talks about, Bear Grylls shows, and Stephen Hawking used to achieve his future. “IQ was not the only difference between my best and worst kids.…

GRIT Grit is defined in the dictionary as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals. " In her Ted talk; Grit: The power of passion and perseverance, Angela Lee Duckworth talks about the necessity of grit and how we can get our kids grittier, I agree with Ms. Duckworth and feel that what she said made complete sense. In the following paragraphs, I will argue how it doesn’t take someone with great talent to achieve great things, it doesn’t matter the family income or background to be successful. As Carol Dweck said it is all about growth mindset.…
