I imagine myself walking through Barnard’s black iron gates, leaving behind the fast pace and overwhelming excitement of the city I have always loved, and entering a place where faculty and students make up one community. I am enthralled by the prospect of learning beside other passionate women in an environment that encourages intellectual-curiosity. With its Nine Ways of Knowing, Barnard is dedicated to equipping young women with the confidence and skills that aided the success of Martha Stewart and Zora Neale Hurston. The ubiquity of great women and the outstanding academics is both empowering and awe-inspiring. A Barnard woman is strong, independent, driven, passionate and, as Professor Shu-Wen Wang said, “defines her life for herself.”
