Personal Narrative: Band Analysis

Swimming through the Notes I can remember the day in fifth grade band sitting at the long, gray percussion tables listening to our band director teach “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” Staring off into space because I already knew how to play it for a few months, I could vaguely hear Mrs. Tripi’s voice telling the flutes to watch for A flats and reminding the trumpets that B flat is first valve. As I waited patiently for the rest of the band to finally pick up on the well-known melody, I sat thinking of how boring the class was starting to become. I could already read music. I could already play scales, and I could already play multiple percussion rudiments. After mouthing some words to my best friend, Miranda, up in the flute row, Mrs. Tripi was ready to start something new. While explaining the game, she told us to stand up. We played the song multiple times, starting slow and gradually increasing the speed each time. Once someone could not keep up with the tempo, they sat down. When one person was left standing, they were declared the winner. ‘Would the winner receive a prize?’ I thought in my eleven year old mind. Even though I wanted to win, I really did not care because band was finally becoming exciting. My first involvement in an activity began when I was six at the Warren Olympic Club. I never showed interest in playing a certain sport, so my parents signed me up to join …show more content…
“You don’t want to touch it.” I never forgot those words and hardly ever touched the edge again that year. As Coach Mike continued to coach me throughout the rest of the season, I realized how much I really like swimming. At the first meet, after swimming a long twenty-five meters or one lap, I was exhausted. After getting out, a young lady handed me a multi-colored ribbon. I now know that all kids in the eight and under bracket got one after every race, but at the time it made me feel special and want to continue

As soon as my dad could put a glove on my hand the learning process began and after my first practice I fell in love with the game. From that point on all I did was softball, it was my safe place, my other home and the one thing I knew I could do something great in. I would always want to just throw with my dad or my brother, as little as I was I wanted to show them that I could catch the hard balls they threw. Of course though, I couldn’t but I was in the process of getting there.…

Personal Narrative It took us about 3 hours to get to Shakopee, it was only 60 degrees, but with the thousands of people lined up, waiting to get in, it felt like 90. We stood in that line for two hours. For awhile, we talked, we met a variety of people, we laughed, we were excited. But once we got closer to the front of the line we all got quiet, this is it, we were in, we were all going to see our idols.…

If I have not challenged myself to practice and to confront challenges, I could not have become the principal player in our school’s jazz band and wind ensemble. After several breakthroughs, I decided to share my inspirations to the younger generation. This year, I am one of the coordinators of the Molding Musicians program supported by the Cypress Boys and Girls Club, teaching the fifth and sixth graders how to play an instrument. I appreciate the fact that my achievements did not come from an easy work, but rather a persistent standing against…

Cool Korn As I sat down with one of the coaches, who is the defensive backs coach on the Tennessee State University (TSU) football staff, I noticed how Coach Korn reminded me of myself. My interviewee was Coach Korn, since I play offensive line, he is not one of my coaches. Coach Korn and I have had our occasional hi and bye’s, but until this interview I knew not much of him. I noticed a few things, one being that he has been interviewed before because when we sat down he showed no signs of nervousness, second is that he kept his hood on throughout the entire interview, and third was that Coach Korn did not speak with a loud voice but at the same time I understood his…

The screeching of my violin echoed off the wall as I struggled to play Mendelssohn's concerto in E minor. The double stops that were meant to flow in harmony came out in a jumbled mass of notes indistinguishable from the shriek of a dying cow. I whimpered as these terrible sounds emitted out of my violin, and threw my violin down in defeat. I slowly tilted my head towards the clock, a terrifying reminder that my addition was only 10 min away. I gathered up my music, and ambled away from the empty practice room to where my judge would listen to my audition.…

It was the second week middle school when my band teacher had asked for me to stay after class: “Rachel you should think about quitting the band.” At that moment, I had felt my mind go blank; I was devastated. I had always known I was a bit behind in learning the notes and developing the sound of my tone; however, I had never once thought about quitting band. I loved music; just turning on the radio brightened my mood. I felt impatient in my other classes, waiting until I could go and pick up my instrument.…

"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…

It was 5:30 in the morning and we were waiting in the cold summer air on the corner of 6th and 48th for the band Twisted Sister to play a free concert for the TV show Fox and Friends. We had been there for over two hours and had many more to go, but we were steadfast in our want to be in the front row of the concert. Being there for so long, I had struck up a conversation with a family of metalheads I was standing with. Long hair, cutoff band tees, chains, and tattoos, they were as stereotypical as characters from a Mötley Crüe or Iron Maiden music video. I was drawn to the tattoos of this one 40-something woman with dyed red hair.…

The first time I walked into the Ashley band room, I had no idea what to do with myself. I was scared and trying to get used to a lot of changes that had just taken place in my life, and sitting in the front row being directed by someone three times my size was quite an intimidating way to start out my first day at a new school. Despite that, I quickly realized that I was setting myself up to be a part of something incredible when, during a quiet moment, someone in the back of the room (I still have no idea who it was) let out a loud Chewbacca growl. There were so many ways that you could have handled it, but you just said, “hey man, don’t growl at me!” and moved on with rehearsal. I’m probably the only person who remembers this happened,…

The phrase “band is life” is thrown around between each member of the band. To an outsider, the phrase might be a little strange and not knowing the context of it might be off putting. The phrase to each member roughly means this is what I really enjoy being apart of and I'm proud of what I'm building. Another phrase used by the band at Center Hill is “What does it take to make a marching band great?” and the response of the entire band yells back “Pride!”…

Late nights can bring about very surreal experiences. I was listening to my music with my headphones on while doing homework, like most nights, and an unrecognizable song starting playing. Now, I add whole albums typically when adding songs; so, this didn't faze me, in fact, I didn't even notice the song had changed. Focusing on my work, I continued. Increasingly, a strong, consistent percussive beat drew my attention from my calculus work to the song.…

Ever since I was very young I've had a strong connection to music. My parents introduced me to many punk and alternative bands from a young age. I've always been a social outcast and generally a very secluded individual and this music really influenced my way of thinking. It wasn't until I discovered my favorite band that music really influenced me though. Since I've always been introverted I've often set aside societal norms and just been myself, but this didn't effect me drastically until middle school.…
