A few months ago I found myself awaking to countless bad hair days. The lifeless molecules on my scalp were a reflection of how I felt and it just wasn’t working. It seemed like everything about my existence mirrored my hair: dried out and tangled. Sometimes life (and hair) gets so frenzied that a fresh start is the only remedy. But discovering that radical change of energy in order to begin anew can be tough.

Gender and beauty norms had me second-guessing this whacky idea of mine. Would people think I was experiencing a breakdown like Britney Spears circa 2007? Or better yet, would being a rebel to society’s standards for women cause people to hate on me? Questions of fitting in and feeling loved consumed my thoughts until I realized that shaving my head would be the most radical change of energy I could possibly pursue at that time in my life. It suddenly grew into the thing I feared the most, leading me to recognize that it was also the thing I needed to do the most. As something both physical and psychological, it was time to transcend my own perceptions and idealizations of beauty.
As the razor glided my scalp and strands of hair fell to the floor, so did the confined beauty standards that society had embedded in me. Many spiritual gurus teach that when you clip a tree, the leaves that grow in the following days are healthier and emerge in abundance. This is because the tree sends its energy in the direction of the clipped area. By shaving your head energy moves in that direction, which is where your lovely thinking machine and Crown Chakra are also conveniently located. And in case you didn’t know, it’s the Seventh Chakra, or Crown Chakra, that is used to communicate with one’s Divine and spiritual nature. I guess that explains it!
Most spiritual journeys begin because we want more than anything to know who we are and where we came from. We want to unlock our true identity. Lack of hair brings me to my core. It makes me feel raw and empowered. I have learned that love for one’s self should come from within, rather than from society’s approval and praise. Identity is not found in labels, tags or appearances. Instead, it is found in beliefs, vibes and core feelings. Identities that are cultivated in Love and Light yield the prettiest form of appearances anyway- appearances that truly glow. That is your essence; that is who you truly
