Personal Narrative: Bacolod

After thirty-six hours of turbulent flights I arrived in Bacolod, feeling jetlagged and underqualified. It’s true the virtual calculator I wrote to make shorter work of my Algebra homework had become a minor hit online, garnering a few hundred downloads; and it’s true that the computer I wrote that calculator on I had “Frankensteined” together with components from the recycling center. But I had never worked in IT, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that the position my uncle had offered me, intern with the IT department of the all-ages school where my aforementioned uncle worked as vice-principal, was one that could be better filled by someone else. Of all the teenage computer geeks with no summer plans, why me? To top things off, I didn’t speak a word of Ilongot. Even though Bacolod is my mother’s hometown, I came there an outsider, a Texan unable to tell balut from a balisong. After few days of recovery, which I gratefully spent sleeping, gaining weight, and trying to remember the names of the multitudinous relatives who expected me to recall our last meeting, eight years ago. …show more content…
The daily routine of fixing printers, removing malware, explaining to suspicious teachers that I was not, in fact, installing malware, all fell into place. What caused me slight concern was my supervisor, Elmer, the newly hired computer teacher. It wasn’t that Elmer was some ill-tempered stentorian; he was very friendly. The problem was, as he explained to me not thirty minutes after we were introduced, Elmer’s knowledge of computers went about as far as Photoshop usage. For anything more technical, I would on my

I was a member of a car club called No Limits Kustoms (NLK), and we would focus our efforts on Making Christmas better for impoverished children by using our love of cars. One of the ways we helped was by donating our time and effort by volunteering at the malls Salvation Army Angel Tree program. We would alter public space in the center of the mall by setting up tables next to a huge Christmas tree. The table would have these angel name hangers with children’s names on them. When people came up to the our tables we would ask them if they wanted to choose a child or if they wanted us to.…

Bimba I hopelessly sit on the chalky sidewalk alone, isolated from the roar of street cars and buses intrusively honking their obnoxious horns. My thoughts surround me as I wait for someone to make a simple gesture and toss a small bill in my decrepit Tim Hortons’ coffee cup. The petite awning of the Korean restaurant I sit my back against, along with my cup and two nickels, is all I have. Ever since I lost my job, I cannot bear to see the face of a human, especially my own. Listening to the sound of jubilant people laugh eats at my wandering soul.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

The bell rang and I began heading to my next period class, which was a study hall. A sense of hope entered my mind, “I’ll be able to brainstorm something for sure, then I can get to typing the next day and I’ll be okay.” The only thing that had changed was the surface I stared at, and the people that surrounded me. I began to work on other school work, pushing out the lack of ideas like a bad memory and trying to forget the time wasted staring at nothing. It wasn't until the next day in the computer lab that I started again to think of this assignment, like reopening wounds of incompetence and frustration.…
