Personal Narrative: Babysitting For A Single Night

Improved Essays
Babysitting for a single night can be challenging, let alone five. I was a councillor at a five day science camp out in the middle of the woods. At first, I was reluctant to even sign up--not because of dislike for work or children, but I am a severe introvert who barely likes leaving the house.
Despite myself, adventure calls to me, so I agreed anyway.
The first day, I was very late to the opening meeting. They were understanding due to the fact that I lived hours away and had to be there so early in the morning, but I felt sheepish, for I liked good first impressions.
I was assigned six girls that would share a cabin with me, and I would be responsible for guiding them through their schedule. I had a co-councillor, who was another teenage

They lasted for about two hours, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon, and our assigned teacher, or Naturalist, would give us lessons about the ecosystem. I learned the names of many local trees and plants, and I even got to eat a wild mushroom.
There were rough times, though. However it was a real confidence booster for me to know that I could handle situations like an adult. One day, we missed a roll call because it was not specified on our schedule! This bothered me, so I alerted one of our managers about the situation. She was happy I brought this to her attention, and I was happy to be helpful.
Meal times were interesting. Every councillor and child was assigned a number, and we'd sit at the round wooden table that matched our number. That way, we could meet kids from other cabins and eat meals with them. The food was surprisingly better than I thought it would be, and I was so happy to see that they had coffee for the staff. I can't think right without my coffee.
The last day was the best in my opinion. We went on a six hour long hike, through tough terrain. I am glad I had become athletic through martial arts, because my old desk-loving artist self would have probably collapsed on the side of the mountain. I was probably running half the time, keeping up the with

Dewey & Freire: An Experiential, Social Approach to Early Childhood Education When connecting the philosophical theories learned in class with my future pedagogical practices, I am naturally inclined to focus on those philosophers whose ideas resonated with me the most. As a believer that the purpose of education is to raise active members of society and that education can indeed change and improve our social system, I selected John Dewey and Paulo Freire as the two pillars of my teaching philosophy. From Dewey’s point of view, learning and real life are intrinsically related and the school should be an “embryonic society” that echoes the community itself; Paulo Freire recognized the school as a reflection of society as well and, as such,…

After a long year, I finally was back at La Semana, a week long adoption camp for kids from Latin American countries. After the joyous reunion hugs and hellos, I headed off to my classroom that I would be helping in. Glancing out the window I instantly knew that it was one of those picture perfect days. The sun already shining, and a cool breeze just strong enough to lightly brush through my hair. Back in the classroom however, the temperature was not so pleasant.…

Surrounded by a team of nurses, one doctor, and what seemed to be a grouping of blinding lights, I had a peculiar moment of serenity. I can’t quite explain whether it was the epidural or the fact that for twelve hours my body was engulfed by excruciatingly painful contractions which seemed to be attacking me in a sporadic manner, but in that one moment everything was perfect. Somehow I just let go off every single fear I had, I just remembered that in any moment there would be an extraordinary occurrence. Although a natural part in many women’s lives, since the beginning of time, it was a phenomenon in my life.…

My First Time Babysitting It was a dark rainy Friday evening, school just let out for the weekend and I was free except I still had one thing to do left, as I was doing a weird walk jog across the campus while trying not to get soaked just to get to the main building, as my phone started to make this weird ringing noise and obviously I got a bunch of looks. When I looked at my phone I saw that my dad was calling me and when I answered my dad told me not to walk home in the rain and just wait it out. Once I got to the main high school building, I walked through the maze of hallways and lockers, and finally just finally I made it to the front of the building. It was still pouring down rain when I looked out of the window, by this time the storm was almost through…

Growing up I enjoyed watching the television show; Law and Order Special Victims Unit, with my grandfather every day after school. When we would sit and watch the show together, my grandfather would tell me all the time “You would make a great lawyer Joe.”…
