Personal Narrative: August Pullman In A New School Environment

Improved Essays
“Making a big life change is pretty scary. But, you know what’s even scarier?Regret.” This quote is from an anonymous person, but it relates because August made the decision to go to an ordinary public school for the first time and it was my first time going into public school. August and I had a choice whether or not he wanted to try public school and my choice was to attend public school or private school. My essay will examine how I can relate to August Pullman in a new school environment because I moved from Orlando, FL to Oxford just last year. I was excited at first about the first day of school, but when I got there I was really nervous. I could not stop thinking about what if I do not make any friends? What will the other students be like? My first day of school was similar to August’s because I had never been to public school before either, and like him, I wondered what the other kids would be like. The first day of school was nerve racking because although I knew where all my classes were, my mind kept going off topic thinking about who am I going to be friends with? What about lunch, who will sit with me if anybody at lunch? I had a million questions in my head and I could not stop thinking about them, I was …show more content…
There were so many students, I honestly did not know who to be friends with and who not to be friends with. As the first week of school passed I quickly found out who you do not want to be friends with unless you wanted to get in trouble. A few weeks into the first nine weeks of school, there was a girl ( who happens to be my best friend now) and she was reading Harry Potter which I happened to be reading as well. We soon became friends, then best friends because we have so much in common. August and Jack along with Summer are like my best friend and I. We are all similar because August and I were nervous about who will be my friend and how the other kids would react to

Moving schools away from all of my friends should’ve been an appalling experience, surprisingly, it was a blessing in disguise. I went to Agnes Baptist Elementary from kindergarten to 5th grade and I had friends that I've known since I was 3. I loved it there and knew the school like the back of my hand. Everything was superior, like most good things, though there were times where they weren’t, I was harassed by a bully almost everyday, my grades were getting inadequate, and my mom didn’t want me to be a sad, disconsolate 7th grader at a new junior high. In the result, I moved and I went to Savage Middle School, a school that had 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.…

I got friends faster than I thought I would. Plus me and all my middle school friends had lunch together. Most of all the girls I met in school was through old friends bringing them around, in class, and the volleyball team. On August 21, 2010, as my mother dropped me off at Georgetown Middle School, thoughts of panic plundered through my head, hoping my teachers encourage me throughout my first day. I want to write about the experiences that I encountered after attending Carl Junction schools, and the impact and difference it made on my life. People think all schools are the same, that it is school, there’s kids and there’s teachers, you go and sit for 8 hours and you get marked as ‘present’ regardless if you’re learning or not, and if you’re present and you don’t fail, then you go on to the next grade. But I realized something different, when things got switched up for me. I attended Carl Junction schools from 1st grade to the very end of 6th grade, and then I started Joplin in the 7th grade, not knowing anyone from this school, or really this area. When I started school at Joplin I was so nervous, I was nervous about the normal stuff, that no one would like me, I would sit by myself, or people would be mean to me.…

It was the beginning of high school, the start of a new chapter in my life; after coming into the school, the mall looked like the feeding of the five thousand. St. Thomas More has over a thousand students, and every single one was there on that first day, trying to find the way to their new classes just like me. Walking through the halls of St. Thomas More with the unfamiliar smell of the classrooms reminded me of what lies ahead. I thought it was going to be difficult, because I wouldn’t see anyone I know. Fortunately, some of my old friends from St. Pius were in my gym class, so I was glad that I would not be alone in gym class.…

I am not the same person I was in the beginning of this year, and I am definitely not the same person I was two years ago. When the first day of school arrived,I thought of all the negatives, “I’m not going to make any friends... The eighth graders are going to be so scary... etc,” but now I’m not scared. The Hillsborough Middle School has became a home to me. I have made new friends, and lost some old friends.…

I walked into the familiar main entrance of the school, crossing my arms and setting my face into what I thought was an intimidating glare. Although I looked like an angry toddler, with my round face and childish glower, my attitude came across very clearly: I was not happy at all to be back at school. After getting into a huge fight with my friend group earlier that year, I was starting high school essentially friendless. It wasn’t as if I didn’t have another group of people to fall back onto.…

If we all took a moment to look back at our lives, how many of us would wish we could have done something different? Maybe we could have been more outspoken, become more involved in activities. I am only eighteen so you would think there is not much I would want to change; but in reality, there is not. I may have nothing I want to change in my life, I just wish I could change the way things happened. I went to high school in two different schools, both being in two different continents.…
