Personal Narrative: Athletic Traits Of An Athlete

Decent Essays
I have never been much of an athlete, the only athletic trait I possess is the ability to run. I became a cross country runner in the seventh grade and continued to run cross country in high school on Bishop Hartley’s team.

My freshman year running there was plenty of room for improvement. My race times were not good and I was always close to last not only in races but practices, too. Time and time again I saw no improvement in my times. I was determined to improve my times and finish in a better place.

I began to go above and beyond to reach my goal. I changed my diet to consist of healthier foods: instead of having a pretzel and a cherry coke at lunch I had a salad and water. Before the day of a race, instead of staying out late Friday

From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

One year ago today, the first ever Greeley Cross Country Championships was hosted, a 5k race at Josephine Jones Park between the five high schools in Greeley, Colorado- Frontier Academy, Greeley West, University Schools, Northridge, and Greeley Central. Last year Frontier placed first at the meet in the boys race. However, since then their top runners graduated and the Central boys became a real threat to many teams. Although today was mainly a way for Central to come out on top, I wanted redemption from the poor performance I gave at that race. Last year.…

I would stop walking during races. I would push myself a little bit harder during each workout. I would eat healthy and get enough sleep to improve my performance. When I transferred to New Milford my sophomore year, I already had prospects to do Cross Country already fascinated by the sport, however I had no idea where it would take me. Now here I am writing a captain’s letter. In thinking of this draft I was thinking about my strengths and characteristics scrutinizing which ones I look for in a captain. I believe that out if all my traits my one that truly outshines the others is my ability to push my limit and improve because of it. I am completely aware of my current ability level and know I'm not the best on the team, however I gain nothing by comparing myself to others and improvement is where I see results.…
