Personal Narrative-Assisted Living Home

“Grandma! Grandma! Where are we going?” I questioned with over pouring curiosity from the back seat. Grandma Garver smiled from the soft passenger seat of our tan MDX and replied, “We are going to let you and your sister meet someone at the assisted living home.” My heart suddenly fell. “So I just get to see old people in wheelchairs. Great.” I thought. “Although you may think it’s boring, she isn’t who you think she is. Get to know her.” Grandma added, almost reading my thoughts. The scorching hot day of July was baking me into boiled Melody as we drove to the Fountain Park Assisted Living and Memory Care in Ohio. As we drove to the near-back of the place, grandpa took off in one direction while my grandma, 8-year old sister Madison and I stayed by a massive clay-colored door, made of some type of reinforced …show more content…
“I am 92. Yes I am very old. Almost as old as time itself.” Then she chuckled, but I didn’t understand why. In that little 2-hour time, I learned that Maribel was a widow, loved grapefruit, had a 97 year old brother, had two canes, her electric wheelchair, plus a normal wheelchair, and had a knack for collecting jewelry. Heck, she even had two majorly stuffed-to-the-gills-with-jewelry dressers. Jenna was 35 years old in dog years. She was tiny, but larger than a chihuahua and had curly wool-like hair. “I love you great-great-aunt Maribel!” I squealed as I hugged her. In her always happy tone, she answered, “Just call me aunt Maribel. And I love you too!” I felt like I wanted to cry, because it seemed that my life was just trapped, then she came in, happy and jolly as can be, lifting me out of the holes I was always stuck in. I will always remember her, though just two days after she said if her brother was 98, she would at least make it to 95, she didn’t make it. I learned to enjoy the time you have with your family or friends before they

I had arrived early at 2:25pm to start at Spanish Meadows Nursing Home. I assisted in the dining room by setting the table with gift prizes on separate tables: left had a gift for women, middle a special gift for anyone, and right had a gift for men. It was on Thursday during class that there was a bag and tissue only in pink and blue with two things. I bought four more gift bags and tissue paper from Dollar General. There were six gifts: three divisions of woman and man is the color of pink, purple, and blues.…

As the snow covered sled reached the bottom of the hill, the music grew louder, louder, louder, until he was sure that it wasn't an echo. Jonas transferred the last memory of warmth to Gabriel, and once again the flakes of heat began to travel across his frozen skin. Mustering up all his strength, Jonas lifted Gabe's frail body into his cold hands and pushed himself off the frozen sled. He trudged through the snow, Gabriel in his arms, and came to the first doorstep. He collapsed on the door, making a startling noise ring throughout the dwelling.…

The story starts out by an introduction of an eighty year old women under doctor supervision. Granny’s arrogant and didactic tone towards the doctor implies to the readers that there is something wrong, maybe she is too old and her demise may be near. The author’s use of point of view, symbolism, suspense, time diversion within a stream of consciousness, and satire makes the story guessing and totally interesting for the reader. The rising action takes place at the introduction of the story and the epilogue is the last sentence, while falling action is occurring throughout the story. “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Katherine Ann Porter describes a soap opera type cause and effect structure within a dramatic story.…

We first meet on a Saturday morning in April when our paths cross as we walk into The History Center. Ithaca is experiencing a streak of delightful weather, and as my body warms to the sunlight, my soul jumps with the excitement of the day’s prospects; I am participating in an intergenerational oral history project piloted by Ithaca’s local history organization, and today is the day I’ll meet my senior. Together, we walk to the elevator, and I strike up a conversation. Katie is equally excited for this program, filled with anticipation as she prepares to meet her teen. After a mingling period and a short orientation, a wide-brimmed black hat is passed around the room to each of the seniors.…

Adult Home Care: Home Modifications for the Elderly When your senior loved one chooses to continue living at home despite difficulties with mobility or other physical, mental, or emotional challenges, safety is the first thing that should be considered. While adult home care will be able to help them with daily tasks or chores such as light housekeeping, laundry, personal care (bathing, grooming, dressing), meal preparations, and the like, a few home modifications can go a long way to increasing your loved one's overall safety. If you are not sure where to start, your loved one's adult home care aide can recommend a number of standard modifications, but for more in-depth alterations AARP suggests going on the National Association of Home…

Resisting and minimizing old age impositions As the analysis unfolds, I noticed a deeper tension in age construction. Older workers demonstrate a disparity between how they perceived age and how others do. They hold non-conventional beliefs about age as the embrace an ageless identity, but at times, others label them old following traditional old age scripts in interaction. However, as workers face this struggle they aim to control and minimize age meanings that contradict with their perception of age.…

As I eavesdropped on my mother pacing back and forth in our kitchen on that hot summer day in 1993, I anxiously contemplated what her conversation was regarding. The expression on her face appeared serious and cautious; this phone call was not like her other daily phone calls. She wasn’t rehashing how great Charles Barkley’s calves looked in the Suns game, or venting about her experience with a patient at her work. I knew this phone call meant that somehow our lives were about to change. At last, her phone call ended.…
