Personal Narrative: Assembly Line

Improved Essays
A week had gone by. Two weeks, then three. Finally a month had gone by and we were ready to turn in our finished video. It was the largest video project the five of us had undertaken and it had taken us the better part of four weeks to finish, but we finally crossed the finish line with a lengthy five minute short film.

This is the feeling I had after finally finishing the short film that a small group of five of us were tasked with creating. Each of us did our part, and being the leader of the group I was assigned the job of directing the project. We all worked together and did our best to be efficient, as that would be the only way we would be able to bring our story to life. Similar to an assembly line, we all worked on our individual tasks,

In this story, I was at my best when I was working with others towards a common goal. Last January, my Boy Scout Troop partook in the Hopewell Klondike Derby. Our troop constructed a sled for the competition and prepared everything we needed in a long black box. In this derby each team is challenged to pull their sled along a course to several stations in which our boy scout skills are tested. Our team did fairly well at quite a lot of the stations, while we struggled on others.…

The groups were decided at random, and I was placed luckily with two very close friends, Josefeth and Reyna, and Kevin, a student who did not have the best reputation for completing his assignments. I felt from the beginning that I might end up doing more work than Kevin, but I decided to trust that he would not let the group down when so many points were at stake. We began delegating responsibilities amongst ourselves and made progress as they days went by. Nearing the deadline, we checked on each others progress a few days prior to the due date. Reyna, Josefeth, and I had each completed our segments of the assignment, and Kevin had assured us that he, too, had completed his portion.…

As a child, I remember my grandma reading me The Little Engine that Could every time I visited her house. Which may seem slightly odd that, that’s what I enjoyed as a kid. It quickly led to me writing in school. During kindergarten, we were all about writing our own books. For example, I ended that year with 22 books.…

I created new opportunities for my teammates by distributing and sharing leadership. I listened to all ideas or suggestions from each member of this team, that everyone had a voice and was heard. I assigned sections of the invention to each person so each had ownership in success the design. As a team, we all need to agree or disagree with the group’s decision and live with the design and the direction that we take. I worked with my team to inspire them to keep our design simple and take mini steps to achieve our goal.…

While most kids were outside playing in the mud and dirt, I was sitting inside on a couch, comfortable, clean, and happy to do so. As a child, I detested the idea of getting my clothes dirty. I loved to be able to maintain the pristine cleanliness of my outfit, so I often refused to play outside. Instead, I resorted to a crimson red Gameboy SP with a blazing LED screen, almost too big for my hands, for my childhood action. I’d live out intense fantasies in that three inch square.…

The idea of being told that I had to work for the first time made me want to eat glass; but could it possibly have turned out for the better? In England, when you reach 10th grade you participate in a nationally accepted program called 'Work Experience'. ' Work Experience' is when you work just like you would if you were legally an adult except with this program it only lasts a week. After 2 weeks of tireless searching I landed a job at Ariya Capital; an experienced developer and investor in clean energy and infrastructure projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It was actually much more advanced than any job I ever thought of getting.…

The Salvage Yard I have been going to The Salvage Yard for about a year now, and I have seen many things. I have seen a man pretend to have a heart attack, so he could get some attention, I have witnessed someone decide to give his life to God, but what I saw last Sunday just filled my heart with infinite joy. The Salvage Yard is a place that feeds the homeless or just anyone that walks through the door. Most of the time it reeks of poor hygiene and smoke, and of course the stench of whatever we cooked for them that Sunday, mixes in with it to make a smell that just makes your nose want to fall off.…

Garage Workshop I've done it countless times. I walk up the driveway of my dad’s generic suburban ranch house and open the fading, white garage door. If I worked for the B&O Railroad as a brakeman in 1877, I would have no other choice but to go on strike. The job is a risky one that puts me in danger every day. There was a pay cut 3 years ago that took its toll on all the workers. Adding another 10% reduction in salary, topped with working fewer days in the week, there is no way that a family can be supported properly. This is a job that keeps me away from my family and is incredibly dangerous.…

Breathing is difficult, as if each breath only fills my lungs a fraction of what my body is accustomed to. Taking the respirator mask off seems like a viable solution if only I wasn't encompassed in an oppressive cloud of dust. My hands are numb. We all tried, but I think some of us took the project more seriously than others. Kevin was always late to our meetings event though when we created the team contract we agreed to be punctual unless there was an emergency. I doubt that there was an emergency every single week when we met. I think Amy and myself did most of the work, we had to assign work for Kevin and Shaohui to do otherwise they would not take the initiative to do something unless we asked them to do it which was frustrating because Kevin was supposed to be the project manager and it was his responsibility to make sure that we were doing our part and being the leader of the team. I am not saying that it was all his responsibility because we are all adults and can do our part, but what I am saying is that they were not behaving as adults.…
