Decent Essays
In August 1999 I had the privilege of meeting Arthur Ray Hawkins, known to many as “Coach Hawk”. Being a typical teenager, I didn’t always heed to the words of wisdom that he tried to instill into me daily. Then in May 2001 a relationship that I thought was ending, to my surprise was only just

The drive of Bruce Olson and what he had to go through in his life relates to my life in the way that I want to become a missionary someday. Both my life and his are very different right now, but reading about his life and the things he endured both scares me and brings excitement. The thought of leaving my family and everything I know to go live in a foreign place doesn't exactly sound like something I would volunteer for, but doing the will of God and meeting new people interests me like nothing else. Like Bruce, I am a people-person, I like to be with someone all the time. It scare me to think about how Bruce was so lonely in South America, while he wasn't able to speak very much and communicate with others.…

I was only five, and when I walked up to him for the first time I had no clue he would change my life forever. My first moment with Melvin was watching him lay tile. I watched as he very eloquently placed each piece of porcelain and grout on the floor in a way that I had never seen before. I was immediately captivated.…

My young closeted nerd mind couldn’t handle the geeky over load, after watching three back to back episodes staring the amazing Adam Sessler and magnificent Morgan Webb, it dawned on me (cue Strauss…

Beginning I suppose that an ordinary autobiography would began with a date of birth. Regretfully, I do not know of the time which I was born. I, like many other slaves, was not afforded the privilege of such knowledge. Not because our masters did not want to tell us, I’m pretty sure that they were not aware of it either, no, if anything, having the knowledge of when their slaves were born was most likely considered blasphemy to them, but I digress.…

When you hear the words “The Eighties” what first comes to mind? There is a good chance the first subjects that come to mind would be big hair, classic rock, sweet workout videos and clothes, and great movies. If I were to be transported back in time and be forced to live out the rest of my life in a time period, my very first pick would definitely be the eighties due to it being one of the most iconic decades. Growing up, my father talked about how different it was back then compared to how it was in the early 2000’s. Being young, I never imagined exactly how different it could’ve been until I got the game Guitar Hero Encore:…

Raised by Legends As a child, my bedtime stories were of knights clad in gleaming, black suits who spoke of justice and equality for not only their people but for human beings as a whole. My heroes preached and prayed alongside one another for their stories were stained with the trials and tribulations of all people. As a child, going to college was never an option, but a privilege that should be treated as such. I grew up surrounded by individuals who truly knew what struggle was and understood what harm accompanied being denied the right to an education simply because you were black. After all, there wasn't even a high school in Murphy (where I grew up) that permitted African-Americans to attend until the early seventies.…

Coach took a seat and flung his hands over his head, letting out a woeful sigh as if to say it was over. After a moment of motionless stares I looked inquiringly at my teammates, all run down across the aged, inclined bench with nothing left in the tank. My ears hear the sound of the squad backing down, caving through the pressure of what seemed to be a stress-free game. Three quarters flew by and we were down by a commanding double digit deficit, heads down and unable to fathom the shock losing another a playoff game it seemed as if the season was over. Coach rose off plastic lawn chair ‘I know it seems like this is the end of what has been a courageous season, but right now up to this point I can’t teach you boys any further material than you already know.…

It was 5:45 Thanksgiving evening in Raleigh, North Carolina, I had the honor to interview my oldest aunt who is seventy- one years old by the name of Elois Hollingsworth Hayes. After a great family dinner my aunt I had a chance to sit with each other and reminiscence on her life and different aspects that described her life. We began by discussing her occupation where she was Miami-Dade County public school teacher, were she enjoyed most teaching students English and found most satisfying in instructing the students literature that most students found hard or less interesting and making it fun and attention-grabbing. Ms. Hayes described her best result of her efforts in her work was her students learning the material she taught but mostly that…
