Personal Narrative: Ariel

Because of health reasons, my eldest sister, Ariel, hasn’t been able to drive for a little over a year. Sometime after Christmas, my parents dubbed me responsible enough, and Ariel well enough for me to be her new chauffeur; responsible enough of a driver, taking extra care to drive safe, and well enough to pay attention to any drifting from anything I read in the manual. The first time we took off was to take a quick trip to our local Dollar General. Ariel’s daughter, my niece, was sick with a cold so we needed to pick up some baby ibuprofen. Since Bethany, Aaron, and my dad was at work, Sierra, Elizabeth, and my mom were also sick, I was the only “driver” available. The sides of the road were washed away and what was left was not in the best condition. Usually, one of our neighbors takes his bulldozer and smooths out the road, but the rain hadn’t let up enough for him to be able to do so. On we went, Ariel guiding me to stay where there actually was a road, and thankfully no other vehicles crossed our path on the narrow stripe. It was a unanimous decision to take K-15 on the way home.

The turns, curves and large dips in the road were not taken as well as they should have been, but my sister was patient in her, much apricated, “backseat” driving. Everything felt too fast coming, especially the turns. I was constantly reminded to either slow down which always led into “you still have to keep your foot on the accelerator”. My speedy turns have mellowed out considerably but now I seem to receive the later advise continuously. Turning into the parking lot was a disaster; I basically stopped in the entrance upon the realization the I was taking the steep too quickly. I also discovered that my parking skills were non-existent, and still are. The way I see it is, if you can’t park at the Mulvane Dollar General, then you can’t park to save your life. Maybe I’m being a bit extreme, but it seems highly

Over the years and years spent on studying mythology, Joseph Campbell came up with the concept of The Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey states that all hero’s travel in a similar path and go through many similar stages that’ll lead them to their reward. However, not every hero’s journey has to involve obstacles as in slaying a dragon or trying to save the world. In my case, I had to do nothing but trying to make it through sixth grade year. Sadly, sixth grade was the year that I faced the most challenges, real world challenges at least.…

Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end.
