It’s brutal being the middle child and only girl. All of your relatives know your siblings for the simple reason that they’re older or younger than you. Granting it was fun, yet not the sport made for me. Freshman year I was told that if I played a sport (tennis), I wouldn’t have to take a physical education class. Most of the team was upperclassmen that just thought I was dreadful once I reached the courts. Struggling pushed me to become a very skillful player. I would practicing every day and stay after school to understand the game in general. As soon as people hear tennis they believe that it’s an “old man sport” or that’s it's easy. My first “actual dream job” was to be a lawyer because I sought to be heard. It was frustrating living with people who have such antiquated views. The only way I was able to express my voice was by journaling. It was my safe place, anytime I needed to say something, but couldn’t speak up. Well, until a classmate of mine took my journal and started reading it out loud. He thought it was a diary and wanted to see “if I was writing about him”.
Although I stopped writing, I took a public speaking class that had about twelve people, meaning we all had to share. It showed me that you’re only wrong if you don’t say anything. Although we think that because we might be wrong its better not to say anything because we don’t want to get laughed at. That’s one of the things in our society; we are so quick to say someone is wrong. We all act on impact one of the reasons why there are so many broken families and hearts.
In brief, I was tired of being a shadow, so instead I worked to be known as Elizabeth. Getting the Union Bank Internship was a major milestone in my life.
