Personal Narrative: Are You Related To Diego?

Improved Essays
I’ve lived behind my brother’s shadow since I can remember. Even coming into high school the first question I was asked was “Are you related to Diego? (My brother)”. People recognize him and before they even notice me. For instance, my family will greet him with smiles and hugs and I with “what’s your name again?” This affected caused me to be such an introverted person.
It’s brutal being the middle child and only girl. All of your relatives know your siblings for the simple reason that they’re older or younger than you. Being raised in a traditional Mexican household the rule is, girls in the kitchen and boys in the yard. My eight-year old self was in the kitchen cooking while the boys worked on the car. As much as I wanted to tell my parents

Granting it was fun, yet not the sport made for me. Freshman year I was told that if I played a sport (tennis), I wouldn’t have to take a physical education class. Most of the team was upperclassmen that just thought I was dreadful once I reached the courts. Struggling pushed me to become a very skillful player. I would practicing every day and stay after school to understand the game in general. As soon as people hear tennis they believe that it’s an “old man sport” or that’s it's easy. However if they would go on the court they would sink. I am proud to say that I am now one of the best players out on the …show more content…
My first “actual dream job” was to be a lawyer because I sought to be heard. It was frustrating living with people who have such antiquated views. The only way I was able to express my voice was by journaling. It was my safe place, anytime I needed to say something, but couldn’t speak up. Well, until a classmate of mine took my journal and started reading it out loud. He thought it was a diary and wanted to see “if I was writing about him”.
Although I stopped writing, I took a public speaking class that had about twelve people, meaning we all had to share. It showed me that you’re only wrong if you don’t say anything. Although we think that because we might be wrong its better not to say anything because we don’t want to get laughed at. That’s one of the things in our society; we are so quick to say someone is wrong. We all act on impact one of the reasons why there are so many broken families and hearts.
In brief, I was tired of being a shadow, so instead I worked to be known as Elizabeth. Getting the Union Bank Internship was a major milestone in my life. Out of the students that were interviewed they chose me. It was incredible that they noticed something about me that maybe another candidate didn’t have? This opportunity also drove me to purse other chances such as

During my younger years my dad, who played tennis when he was younger, coached me and taught me how to hit my basic ground strokes such as backhands and forehands. As I entered high school, I went out for the tennis team and made the junior varsity team. It was during my first year on the team that I learned about how much fun it was to be on a sports team. What I loved the most was that even as a freshman, I was able to make friends older than me who served as my mentors for both school and my tennis…

Being so young when I first started playing, winning and losing did not matter at all. As long as I got to throw, hit, and catch the ball, I was happy.…
