Personal Narrative: Are You Reading Enough

Decent Essays
Are You Reading Enough? I’ve always loved reading as long as I can remember. As I grow older I feel as if I’m drifting away from reading. The question is am I reading enough? Right now I don’t think I am. I would love to go to the library, go to bookstores, or when I would go into a store I would always pick up a book or magazine and start reading. I still do really love reading, but I hardly have any time to anymore, my schedule is school, practice, home, homework, then sleep. But when I do have free time I try to read a book. This year I have only read two and a half books, usually I read five books in one year. Next year I plan to read at least five again because when I read an article in Mrs. Santana’s class,

To say that I am a reader would be a stretch. I can not remember the last time I picked up a book for my own personal pleasure. Some would say that should bother me, but I can’t agree with the reasoning behind it. Mostly people bring up how books have broadened their horizons and changed their way of thinking, which is something I can’t relate to. Instead, I would say that I agree with what a good book should do, but I can‘t say I have found a good book, or a page turner if you will.…

When I was a little girl, reading held my attention more than anything else. Although it was something that I truly took pleasure in, the passion that I had for reading simply withered away. Once I became older, and technology became more advanced and life became more hectic, I put those books down. I guess the real question here is, what is happening to reading?…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

In the beginning of my freshman year in high school, I used to read a lot of books. I used to read from romantic novels to long articles about conspiracies that had to do with Area 51 and extraterrestrial life. I loved the idea that I could gain so much knowledge from articles and books if I took some of my time to read it. I would read books within a week because that is how captivating and enjoyable the books were to me. However, by the end of my senior year, I had realized that I had spent most of time on my computer rather than taking my free days, like my Sunday’s afternoons, in the living room taking time to read and write.…

Recently my perspective drastically changed to something I will have forever. Over the past summer, I had many realizations as I was about to begin my senior year of high school. I felt overwhelmed in the monumental changes that would occur over the next year and then after all that I would be moving away from home for the first time. Ultimately, my perspective changed into one of an adult. No longer would I rely on my parents to provide food and clothing for me, but soon I would have to do this myself.…

Reading was the first activity I have wholeheartedly enjoyed. I have spent countless days wanting to do nothing more than to lose myself in oceans of text. Reading had no downside for me. It wasn’t boring or too challenging; I was able to read whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. Reading was a freedom that I practiced avidly; for years teachers would praise my “mature and intellectual actions” as I hungrily hunted bookshelves for a new novel, but that all changed once I entered the seventh grade.…

The first 12 years of my life I avoided reading or writing because I associated it with school work and if there was one thing I avoided at all cost it was that. My first year and a half of school was on a tiny island named Guam and the school was probably far, far below any standards back then. The teachers could spank the children in front of the class and my teacher in particular chose a whale bone as the weapon of choice. I think one of the hardest things was that we were not taught in English all the time, my teacher favored speaking in Chamorro more often than not. Still to this day I can still speak a bit of Chamorro…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…

Story of a Book Reading and writing are key elements of literature. Reading and writing were never a hobby for me. These two elements are fundamental principles for everyone’s education, so there goes me learning how to read and write. Only times I get interested in reading and writing is when I read and write something interesting, like something with a meaning that makes you think, or something with a cause. I love learning how to speak new languages, which interests me to end up reading and writing them.…
