After weeks of cloudy skies and harsh winds, we have been welcomed with sunny and tranquil days here at McMurdo Station. The clearing of fog dense skies of past have marked the return of the majestic views of the Trans-Antarctic Mountains in the distance. With the days getting shorter and the constant darkness of the Antarctic winter looming; I decided make the short and leisurely hike down to Hut Point overlooking McMurdo Sound to watch the Sunset. I was able to catch an amazing video of a Weddell Seal coming ashore from the ice-cold waters. It brings upon a warm and peaceful consciousness when you experience nature in such a stunning and pristine environment. It inspires a strong realization of how fortunate we are to live on this beautiful planet and just how vulnerable it is. Antarctica truly is the last frontier, no country owns it; it’s bound by the Antarctic Treaty that dedicates this vast and frozen land to the sole purpose of Science and Discovery. I find that the journey for knowledge and the disseminating of facts and information that enlighten our world to better our civilization is as beautiful and intriguing as the majestic mountain landscapes that surround me. Our species would not have evolved from the ape like humanoid that lived in caves to the technology advanced multi-cultural species we are today without the pursuit of Science, Discovery and Education. However, everyone is faced with diverse experiences and their own unique challenges that construct their own perspectives and the way they perceive the world. It’s inconceivable to believe that my own personal opinions and views would not come through in my writings as I reflect on my travels and life experiences. I have found that my world view and perspectives on life are continually moving like the needle of a wandering compass.
