Although I could not figure it out at the time, by the end of my two weeks there, I came to understand why this normally uncomfortable place seemed like home. When our mission team gathered on our last evening in the compound, I could not believe the trip was nearly over. As usual, our evening meeting continued far past dark while we spent extra time worshipping, discussing the trip, and praying for our return home. Once we finished our time of final debrief, a few of my closest team members and I headed out to the volleyball …show more content…
I found Anna Clemens. Anna was a role model for me in high school; although she graduated after my freshman year, she wanted to return to Haiti with our youth group as a chaperone. Over the course of the trip, I grew to admire her even more. That final night in Haiti, under the obvious display of God’s glorious creation, she broke the silence with a prayer. “Lord, we are sad to leave this place, this place that feels like home, but we know, God, that home is wherever you are, and we look forward to the day we are all home.” At that moment, I finally found peace in spite of the coming

Every girl growing up has someone she loves at first sight; someone that instantly becomes a huge part of her life. When I say love at first sight, it’s not always about a lover. It can be someone you are just absolutely infatuated with, or a role model. I was fortunate enough to find a role model who truly makes me feel like an important piece to the puzzle of life. That role model is Jill Cochran, PhD, APRN-FNP.…

It was the first day of our medical mission trip. The 13 of us were divided into four group: triage, clinic, pharmacy, and faith. Colin, Laure, and I sat in plastic white lawn chairs, facing the locals who sat on three wooden benches. We had prepared a short, spiritual lesson to bring Jesus’ love to the rural cities of the Dominican Republic. When I welcomed them in their native language, their faces softened.…

In the United States, the CDC named Haiti as one of the four most at-risk groups of carrying HIV/AIDS (Farmer 2006:211). The inclusion of Haiti was based solely on nationality and race; this aided in the formation of the external cultural model of HIV/AIDS, which blamed Haitians for being the source of HIV/AIDS in America, due the their “exoticism”, “American scientists repeatedly speculated that AIDS might be transmitted between Haitians by voodoo rites, the ingestion of sacrificial animal blood, the eating of cats, ritualized homosexuality, and so on…” (Farmer 2006:224). Farmer describes this external model of HIV/AIDS in Haiti as the most prominent example of structural violence. What chance did Haitians stand against the almighty United States to contradict this statement?…

I never knew a little girl from Guatemala could have such an impact on my life. We did not speak the same language, and it took two translators to find out her name: Lady Maria. While on a mission trip in this country, 9 people from my youth group traveled to Panimache, a village two hours deep in the mountains. I noticed her even before exiting the van, and instantly knew I would spend the day with her. I connect well with children, but she was different.…

We had a mission, a goal, and a plan. What we came back with was much more. We came home with a new faith and a new understanding of life. To say it was an eye opener is an understatement. Sights, Sounds, and Smells of Sandy I remember waking up that October morning. It was unusually cold and windy outside, especially for Orlando, Florida, where I was vacationing with my family at a Walt Disney World resort.
